Did an oil and filter change last night. With engine warm drained the oil and left for about 30 mins to make sure all the old oil drained out and swopped the filter. Refilled with 4.7 litres of 5W30. When starting the engine got the oilcan sign on the dash for a couple of seconds and when checked got a fault show up on the VCDS. Is this normal? Thanks.

First of what car?
Second: did you check the dipstick to see were the oil level was at after letting it sit for half hour or so?
Thats what i do. After filling it up with 5ltrs or whatever i leave it alone for half hour for the oil to drain to the sump on a level ground then top up. Or i will do an oil change at night and leave it and come back to it in the morning and check the level and top up to the middle of the the min-max line. Repeat another day.

The issue was the oil pressure sensor is (usually) in the filter housing, the first oil to hit the sensor is taken from the oil filter.
if you just put the new filter on empty, all sensor gets initially is air - so no oil pressure - & the oil light comes on until the oil gets in there.
Its unlikely that you have damaged anything, so don't worry.
Good old school practice to minimise this is get some oil into the new filter, I try to get mine 2/3rds full.

Thanks for the tip LR5V. Unlike previous cars the filter has a non-return valve so was not sure how it could be primed. Any help would be appreciated.

the dirty oil goes into the outer holes and then back out cleaned from the centre threaded hole.
I would back fill it through the centre hole a bit at a time -yes the non return ones are a pain to do.
Another option, if its an older petrol car, is to disconnect the coil and spin the engine over on the starter a few times to prime the filter fully -dont think I would disconnect coil packs on a modern car as it will probably generate fault codes

Thanks, will try that next time. The other option is out as it has coil packs.
