Title: Common fault? Knocking at front
Post by: picopro19k78 on 19 November 2014, 20:15
Hi all. Picked up a 2.0 MK 4 Gti (85Kw) yesterday as my car died. Knocking from front over bumps and previous owner says was top mounts on suspension. Also searched the site
Looking around they don't look expensive (circa £30 a pair) and just wondering if this is the likely cause/common fault?
Thanks in anticipation

could be a few things, bottom arm (wishbone) front or rear bushes, anti roll bar bushes, ball joints, dog bone (gearbox) mount or the suspension top mounts all give knocking when worn

Worn top mount bearings tend to rattle most of the time rather than knock & the rubber bush tries to escape upwards through the suspension tower.
yes ARB bushes can be clonk, but I'm with wazzer on wishbone bushes
-fronts have the least meat in them and tend to fail quicker than the rear ones
