Title: Wheels
Post by: mcmaddy on 16 November 2014, 09:09
Sorry if this has been asked before but do mk6 wheels fit the mk7? Looking at getting some winter wheels and don't like the offerings from the usual places.

Yes.
Perfectly.

I'm still undecided as to what wheels to bang on mine. I was gonna get a set of BBS CH-R for summer and use the Austin's for Winter Tyres.

You can't go far wrong with a set of CH-R's esp in anthracite on a white car.
Big bucks new but you see the odd set crop up second hand.

There was a set local to me come up for sale recently which made me raise an eyebrow but I think they've sold on another forum now.

Picked up a set of Audi RS4's for the winter tyres on the GTD, the straight lines match the MK7 really well

Even Mk5 wheels or A3 8P will fit it....

I'm using A3 8P 16" Speedline wheels for my winter tyres.

That's what I've done as well - the winter wheels & tyres currently on my GTI were the ones I'd used for the last 3 winters on my 8P A3.

Was actually going to send him a msg this morning about those, just missed out!

Have you not got Pretorias Jim?
I'd say they were one of the best OEM designs ever, not the prettiest maybe but light, functional
And really easy to clean. I'd not swap a set for BBSs

Thing is I love the Austin's but thanks to their mirror like diamond cut finish they look terrible when even remotely dirty. :(

This might have been asked elsewhere, but will 16" steel wheels suitable for a Golf (I've been looking on eBay) fit on a GTI PP or are 17"s the minimum I can use?

I've never really considered winter tyres before, but I've moved out into the sticks and now have a 30 mile commute cross country.

It'll say in the handbook but I'll guess that 17" would be the minimum for a PP GTI

16" is a tight fit on a non-PP GTI, so I would think 17" would be the minimum for a PP.

I've looked in the hand book and it only says "Volkswagen dealerships can provide details on permissible winter tyre sizes".

Have a look on the inside of the filler cap where it lists all the tyre pressures. My non-PP GTI shows tyre pressures for 16" M&S tyres, and I would guess a PP GTI has a different list ?

16”steels won't fit on a pp gti. Minimum size is 17”s.

17”alloys with 225 tyres on or 16”steels/alloys with 205 tyres on for winter which would people go for??
Title: Re: Wheels
Post by: itavaltalainen on 22 November 2014, 15:48
I went for 16" alloys with 205 55 16 winter tyres (instead of 17" wheels with 225 45 17).

Cheaper to get second hand VAG wheels and 16" tyres than 4 winter tyres in 225 45 17 - plus narrower tyres are a bit better in really wintery conditions, higher aspect ratio is better if you do end up hitting something.

So 17" wheels are fine to clear the PP brakes but 16's aren't? Where's the cheapest place to buy a set? That don't look too crap.

17" would look better and give more clearance round the brake calliper, but will cost a bit more.

I think 205/50x17 is another option that I could have gone with when I bought my current winter wheels & tyres (but they were dearer.)

I've gone with the 16s purely for cost purposes - I already had them, and they fitted my car, so no reason to spend any more upgrading to 17s.

I've seen some 17's with 225 tyres for 500 quid. I'm so tempted

Shameless plug:
I have a brand new set of 4 original 18" Monza Shadows which were bought as spare for my Mk6 GTI. All boxed and ready to go. Offers?
