Hi guy's. Sorry to interrupt the usual valid post's..
But i've just found a 96' golf gti mk3 3dr 8v on 99,000 miles in black. But it has no MOT, hasn't done for 2yrs 9 month's apparently. I've been told it has no problems to speak of?????
And i can't legally test drive it, and don't plan to loose my licence over a few reddies!
What's it honestly worth in it's present state? I know what i'd hand over for it though!
Your opinion what be very much appreciated..
Thanks in advance (y)

200 quid or there abouts. Basically scrap value if it's sat up so long. Almost certainly have problems.

Leave it well alone, as said probably shed loads of issues.

Cheer's guy's.. It's nice to have a few other opinion's. All i'm looking for really is a sound body. Ie, less rust than mine! Fat chance i'm thinking though? But disassembling a mk3 is easy as pie! I'll take some common sense with me lol

I've just got back from having a look at the golf. Considering it's been out of use for nigh on 3 yrs, ive seen much worse golf's driving around! The only major thing i noticed first off was both left/right side sill's have rust half way along. You know, when you open both doors and it's staring you right in the face. I had a look at Boney's site. He can supply them at £28 per side.
The owner only want's 250 for it. Naturally i'd offer less. What are your thought's guy's

If sills are rusted then it's rusted everywhere usually.
£200 should get you it... scrap value on mk3 hatch is currently only around 100 - 150.
-
That won't be the only rust trust me, i wouldnt bother unless you really want it.
-
Excellent advice guy's.. Point's me in the right direction. I do want it! But a 100 it is in that case
(y) Thanks

Look at my link in my sig below for what to expect with a mk3 that's been sat up for a while mate. Mechanically it'll probably be fine given the lowish miles but most of these late models suffered badly with rot under the plastic sill covers and wheel arches.
-
I bought a 16v that had sat for years. It did need two front wings, new brake pads and tyres but the rest of it was sound. That was about 5/6 years ago. The reason why I joined the forum infact.

Excellent work you've done there mate. You've gone the whole nine yards! Another mk3 saved. That must have cost you a fortune? I wish i had the space to pull my existing golf apart though. As for the golf i'm due to view again, the rust in the sill's do concern me but replacement sills are cheap, it's the work in cutting it all out of which i don't have spare for. But i don't let little things put me off

The reason why i got a golf originally, they all need some work of some sorts.. I've already rebuilt my engine over the summer. So i'm used to a bit of hard graft

Take all the platic trim off then come bk

Cheers, didn't cost as much as you think. I made my money back on it, Just lol. Was a bit crazy when i read back on it. Hopefully it's still going strong.

Hopefully it is? It should be immaculate underneath? Rust free after all your hard work you've done..
I decided not to buy that black 3rd golf gti after all. After seeing it today in the daylight! the rust was prevalent! faded black paintwork, replaced front drivers wing which was green and same for the bonnet both with poor paintwork. loose side trim, smoke stained interior. Need's new tyres, a total overhaul of the brakes. the list could just go on and on.... Shame, i really wanted it

The best shells are on poverty spec cars.
All that plastic and the fixing holes on GTI models is a dirt and damp trap.
Jack slips off the padded sills and does them in as well.
They all go on the top where the door rubber joins, this can be done but 9 times out of ten the lower sill is goosed as well.
Worst bit to fix is the leading edge of the roof where the glass is bonded in, Jamo will back me up here

I agree! If I was to buy another and build a car I would start with a 1.6 or something.

I reckon you've both hit the nail on the head! The gti trim hides all the rust and traps all the years of uk weather we endure! Perhap's i need to start looking for a lowly 1.4-1.6 non gti? And transfer all my present parts to one of those? I enjoy taking the car apart

Best thing I ever did on my GTI was to get rid of the trim as it all acts as watertraps.
-
I'd remove all my gti trim, but i need some decent weather first! And god knows what i'd find behind all of it?
I'm still on thee look out for a black 3dr gl golf... Answers on a post card

Behind my trim is all good (1 wing has gone at the bottom but that's not behind the plastics). Am I Lucky???
No all the Mk3's I've had have all being solid under the plastics
