Hi guys, I've just had my second issue with the coil packs on my mk6 2011 gti.
First problem was a couple of months ago when I put my foot down on the way to work and the power plummeted and the engine light came on. Took it very easy straight to my VW dealership. Left it with them for the day and they very kindly diagnosed it as a coil pack 2 failure and subsequently changed it FOC.
Same thing happened yesterday on the way home. Again, I drove it very slowly to the dealership today. This time it was coil pack 4 that had died. They have replaced it FOC. They did say they could replace the other two but this would cost £80 or so.
After doing a little research it looks like many people opt to upgrade to the Audi R8 coil packs - part number 06E905115E. Has anyone done this, is it worth doing?
Thanks.

Only really supposed to make a difference at high revs, changed mine as I had two fail and got them at the same price as the standard ones. Engine does seem a bit smoother and revs a bit easier above 4000.
-
Yes I changed my coil packs to R8's after mine blew straight after a remap. They are highly recommended for re-mapped GTI's (or standard for that matter). I also upgraded my plugs at the same time. The R8's were about £130 for the set.

Thanks guys, I thought about just replacing two with standard ones last night as VW paid for the other two.
But after reading your posts this morning I'm thinking R8's again as mine has been re-mapped..!

where you ordering these from? Planning to get my car mapped at some point and want it ready...

They are the ones although I noticed it said only one available..
I found these on ebay:

Have you had a re-map before? Makes a huge difference.

4 is going to cost a pretty penny then :(.
No i havent, only got the GTI not even a week ago, but will look to get it remapped in a few weeks or so. Probably from Carbon Chip Tuning up here in Manchester.

fitted mine today too :). those clips are a bit of a b***h to get off though... i broke one.. hah.

Did you change the plugs as well as I think these run the standard plugs to hot due to the stronger spark.
-
Hmm.. Haven't done the plugs, have you? What ones are best to use?
-
Shame about the clip. I found getting leverage on pack four to pull it out was the hardest!

I just replaced my coil packs with the OEM ones..
APR were supposed to have said that the R8 ones may damage the electrical system.
There is some info in THIS (http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45050) thread about what plugs to use.
-
Skimmed through the whole thread and no one mentioned any problems with R8 packs.
Also saw half way down this page that the plugs VW use for the gti are the 'PFR7S8EG Double Platinum' ones that HS Tuning recommend anyway.. I've only done 35k so far so will leave well alone.
