Buy 5 ltrs, put in 3 let it settle check the dip stick.
Top up as required 250ml a time leaving 5 minutes between to settle and check dip stick.
Don't just pour in the stated amount as that's in a dry condition and does not include whats in the filter or stuck in the channels,

official amount is 3.8 litres as for all 1.8 and 2.0 engines

buy 4 or 5 liter canister and be happy

Drained it last night and just under 3L...seems to get the best fuel economy when the oil is a little bit lower than the bottom mark of within range on the dipstick...this makes no sense really...oil has no water in it...thought the head gasket would be gone...but not...I can't understand why it runs better with less oil and less water than the minimum line....is this normal for older high mileage engines??it has about 150000miles now...no idea how long these petrol 1.8 AAM engines last...:(

Was engine warm when you drained oil? Bit more will come out when it's warm.

I think it's a coincidence that fuel economy was better with lower oil level, possibly due to increase in (outside air) temperature?

The AAM engines will last forever with a little TLC - my 2E had 236k miles on the clock when I scrapped the car, engine still running pretty well. The shell usually rusts away under your bottom long before engine blows.
