Hi all,
First post here:
After a lot of deliberation I'm about to pull the trigger on a MK7 GTI. (essential options - PP, DCC, DNP)
I'm thinking of buying nearly new with 5,000 miles on the clock but have some concerns:
1. I suspect a lot of those currently listed are ex-demonstrators and reckon they've probably not been run in properly. Should I be worried about this?
2. The used prices, at least on the VW used website seem to be holding their value extremely well (approx 1.5k - 2k difference from a new one vs used with 5k of similar spec). Should I try for a decent discount? (Some great discounts on new cars seem to be available from carwow). Are used prices likely to come down at all soon?
3. I've read a lot of horror stories about VW dealerships recently. If anyone can recommend a good one in the south of England or elsewhere, (that has the reach and inclination to source what I'm after) I'd be grateful.
Any thoughts on the above would be really appreciated.
Thanks

1. Me personally, I would never buy a demo. I would buy second hand, but not a demo as it will have been thrashed.
2. Yes, for sure! 10-12% is easily obtainable if you're willing to spend a few hours in a dealership!
3. I recently bought from Citygate in High Wycombe - ask for Alister - he was excellent, and I would defintely buy from him again. Also, my original order before I sourced a car quicker was with Rosh at Vindis in Sawston (Cambridge) - he also was excellent. Both those dealerships were first class in terms of keeping me updated, finance stuff etc etc. Ones to avoid (in my experience) are Lancaster in Letchworth (Herts) and Inchcape in Romford - I won't explain my reasons why but suffice to say I won't be giving them any business again in the future!

The dealers will have some pretty hefty margins in their used cars. They have the monopoly on the nearly new new stock, so will artificially inflate the prices to, A- make more money, B - give the impression that they hold their money well, or C - try to get you to buy a new car instead. They will also use their high used prices as a reason to not discount a new equivalent.
The deal you get will also depend on what you have to trade in. If it's a car that they can retail, they won't get their money back until they've sold it and in some cases, sold the car they take in px against that. If you have no px or a £500 banger, you'll be able to negotiate harder on either a new or nearly new car, especially if you go in armed with a quote from a broker like Drive The Deal etc.
-
Or just use Drive The Deal and support what they are doing....
-
If buying new you want 12% discount. It may be cheaper buying new than second hand with this discount.
Put your car spec into orangewheels and weigh it up.Of course you will have to wait a few months for a new one.Try your local dealer and ask them to match orangewheels,if they won't try another dealership.Where do you live, someone on here will let you know a dealership nearby that offers discount.
-
As I said earlier - or use Orange or Drive The Deal.
Stop using brokers prices to leverage deals with dealers or the brokers will no longer be in business and everyone will pay more....

I have bought ex-demonstrators before (not from VW though) and had no issues. I am wary though, before I bought my Ed30 I went to test drive one at a local dealership. I arranged for a test drive first thing on a Saturday morning. I arrived early and saw the car outside on the forecourt, the car had not been run that morning. Met the sales guy and we got straight into the car, he bounced it hard down the kerb and then from stone cold thrashed it to the red-line in first and second... Suffice to say, I didn't even consider that one...
2. The used prices, at least on the VW used website seem to be holding their value extremely well (approx 1.5k - 2k difference from a new one vs used with 5k of similar spec). They take the p!ss in my experience. Overprice the car your buying (because they have control of the supply) and often as not under-value yours. I ended up buy my Ed30 through a broker for approaching £5K less than the demonstrator, I drove. The only difference was that the one I bought didn't have DSG... and I got substantially more than anyone to that point had offered for my trade-in from the dealer the broker used...
It is a case of shop around to see what deal you can make.
In the end, as others have stated, you may be able to buy a new one for similar money to a nearly new example but you may well have to wait for it...

Gti2015,how much is the car your considering?
I am refusing to suggest that have you considered an R.
-
I picked up from main VW dealer, my 6mth old 4k mile GTi PP with about £4k options for approx %20 off list. One private owner moving up to a Golf R....
-
Just go via Drive The Deal or JCB Medway in Kent for a new one with 10-12% discount
-
Thank you for all the comments above incredibly useful. I think I'm now armed with enough info to get a decent deal.
Good to know why the used prices are being kept high, and sounds like I'll have a good chance of getting a discount. Haven't got a car to P/X which may help. The discounts from the brokers on new models are also very good. £4000 off so not a lot in it.
I'll probably try and avoid a demo if I can help it. I suspect that a lot of them get the treatment described above.
Im looking to spend 26k ish, so i think the R is out of budget and also don't really have a need for the extra power... as much as I'd like to have one.
I'll be looking around the kent area for a dealer.
Thanks again.

If you go through Drive The Deal you will get put in touch with a Kent dealer and save around 12%.

You've obviously not read the R threads then as the R is cheaper if buying on a PCP
These figures were valid from September so may have changed. They are easily worked out on vw.co.uk
Monthly figures after a deposit of £5000.
OTR £26,330 £29,900 £25,765
Term GTI R GTD
x18 £482 £376 £406
x24 £382 £310 £326
x30 £360 £322 £318
x36 £338 £316 £298
x42 £322 £318 £295
x48 £307 £310 £282
-
P3asa: All those figures have changed in the last few days, GFVs have been hammered:-
GFV for R went from 60% to 50%
GFV for GTD went from 56% to 51%
GFV for GTI went from 51% to 48%
As a result the monthly PCP prices have gone up, the R most of all - a £3k drop in GFV there has added about £95 per month to the typical payment over a 36 month term. Not good news for many of us with an R on order. Trying to get VWFS to agree to honour the financial terms in place when I placed the order as going with finance on max deposit and the high GFV is less risky than buying cash and potentially having the car worth £3k less than anticipated.
-
Yeah Matt I've just this minute read your other thread. However if they have all changed then it might very well even itself out as the R was considerably cheaper at certain terms.
Its down just now so can't check.

If you want to buy nearly new I wouldn't let the tales of woe you read here worry you about ex demonstrators. I bought my 3 mth old mk7 PP from Vertu Nottingham, it was the Sales Managers car and was in perfect "as new" condition. They did me a deal I was very happy with and although I was offered some good deals by brokers including Drive the Deal, none stacked up as well as this for me in my particular circumstances. If you can wait and are happy with the personal lease route then good deals can be done. I would say I have owned other cars later in their life which started off as demonstrators and several thousand miles later they were in excellent condition. In reality any purchase new or used ex demo or one careful owner should be viewed dispassionately and the car carefully inspected, be prepared to walk away as there are many others out there.... The 3 years warranty is an excellent safety net if you are worried about a demo or similar. Personally, I would say you need to decide on your "must have" specification and then evaluate rather than compromising on spec to fit a particular purchase route. You'll spend a lot of time behind the wheel and you don't want to be regretting not having for example sat nav or audio options if these matter to you. Either way it's a great car and you'll enjoy it!

The GTi seems to have a 750 quid deposit contribution from VWFS to assist it at the moment. I am seeing a difference of over 100 quid between like for like GTI and R purchases - quite a different situation from how it was until very recently.
A 3-door manual GTI (no options) at 5,000 miles and 36 months is under 300 a month and an R is now over 400! Both deals based on a 5,000 deposit.

I've bought a few ex-demos and 'sales manager's company car's' over the years and even an ex-VW press fleet Polo GTI 1.8t once. They were all trouble free and any marks on them were fixed by the dealer before I saw them. Unless you're planning on keeping them well past the warranty period then it's not really an issue - cars are just mass produced white goods really, if you get a good one then all is well and if you get a lemon it'll always be trouble and the problems will show themselves soon enough.
You've got to weigh it up against the discount on a new one vs. the wait if you need a particular spec vs. part ex prices and so on. There's no perfect way of doing it, some deals you do really well on because you bought at the right time and other deals less so which you will only know in a few years when you come to sell the thing again.

I have bought new (GTI PP) through drive the deal, 12% discount, invoice price £24728 thats with white (extra £265 ish and Dyno audio £500 ish) hoping to pick up the car this month. Have a 600 miles round trip but full tank of fuel I am told.
The demo at my local dealer was a year old , 8000 miles and they wanted £22 k ! Stones chips all over the front as the road surface was new , front tyres need replacing. I have to say when I drove as a demo I drove it hard when not fully warmed up so expect most others did the same. Not saying all are like this but its something to consider. I would be looking at less that 20K to be tempted. However all depends on your budget.
-
Buy new with a 12% discount (Orangewheels, drivethedeal, carfile etc), you'll get a better APR% on a new deal than a nearly new one, so you might see same monthly outgoings on that discounted new one as that £24k second hand 1 year old one.
-
Worth a mention also that you can borrow money a lot cheaper from banks than VW.... if it's all about the monthly payment then that can be a significant factor......

Excellent deal - enjoy the drive back from Kent :-)

Bought a demo 2.0 Sport VW Bora many years ago with 9k miles and we ran it to nearly 85k miles with only one failed water pump (common on that model) but the oil consumption was ridiculous!! and my thinking (rightly or wrongly) was that this was due to having less care in early miles and from cold starts (IE: thrashed) than privately owned.
Not sure if any of that applies to the GTI/GTD in potentially occurring though?
Would buy a car from garage if an exchange though but would want to see service history to see if not exchanged due to someone giving up on it due to niggles.
My GTD is nearly at 10k with first service at 12k and having checked oil just recently its not lost a drop!
