Title: Foamy tyre stuff?
Post by: Exonian on 02 November 2014, 19:32
Having recently relocated from my concrete city haven to a semi-rural mud pit on a building site I'm having a few issues with car cleaning to say the least.
I've not quite got as far as investing in a pseudo 4x4 and a pair of rubber boots to blend in with the neighbours but the GTI is struggling a bit on 35 profile tyres!

Anyway, to save boring everyone with my woes, once upon a time I bought several tins of a foamy tyre cleaner type thing that cleaned the rubber and left it shiny too, and it lasted ages before the tyres went a bit greyish again, I think it might have been sold by Armor All.
I can't find anything similar in any of my local retailers that sell cleaning gear, it's all aerosol stuff that just adds a lacquer and therefore your tyres need to be clean first and mine have stains on the sidewalls that scrubbing won't remove.

Are there any suitable foamy spray thingies available at reasonable cost nowadays or are my tyres to be forever muddy?

TIA

And I can answer my own question as despite searching or it before it didn't show on google but it does now, lesson learnt - stick to a proper computer and not rely on google on a mobile phone internet search! http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/car-cleaning-accessories/exterior-cleaning/tyre-shine/?549770091&0&

Anyway, are there any better ones people use?

What are you doing in here Mr Ex, trying to cure that insomnia???

If you fancy trying somegthing else, there are plenty of gels and liquids which do the job. Things have moved on a bit since tyre foam

A decent all in one cleaner/dressing is Poorboys Bold n Bright Tyre Dressing

Ahhhh, Mademoiselle Boothette, I just knew that despite my trepidation in posting here some helpful soul (most likely yourself) would be along to put me on the right track.
So, a bit like hair gel, the foam is so last year, and instead I need tyre gel eh?

I shall heed your advice and order some.
Thank you!

If it's definitely a foam your after then there's a company in Derby that does one, they're called Quadralene. It's decent stuff and last a while.

Personally I find spray foams a bit messy if there's a slight wind, so as Bec has suggested I'd go for a gel or something?

Thanks!
Quadralene is a new one on me, I'll look it out but if you're all adamant gel is the way forward then that's good for me, in fact what I may do is get a tin of foam from ECP for under a fiver and try a gel on one side and foam on the other side of the car as an experiment to see how it pans out. The roads I drive on will be a good test of anything!

Something silicone based is what you're after, this will give the longest black look. Most dressings now are water based so that they aren't sticky, but they wear off quicker due to being water based.

Quad used to be massive in the automotive products but they've steered more towards hygiene products, however they still do most of the automotive range just in a smaller demand. I might even have some of their spray that you can have, I'll check later and let you know.

If it's a silicone based gel you're after then Meguiars Endurance Tyre Gel is hard to beat imo.

A bit harder to apply than water based stuff but great for longevity and hi gloss black look.  It's pretty thick and is easier to apply with the dedicated applicator http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/meguiars-tyre-dressing-applicator/prod_765.html

Some say it slings but I never had an issue with it.

Thank you again Ms. B!

Does the tyre applicator double up in your makeup box for other uses too?

This thread has given me serious motivation to get my tyres looking city slick again rather than country tractor!!!

Bl00dy cheek

I need no such artificial enhancement........not on that scale anyway

How long before you bow to semi-rural peer pressure and ditch your pretty little GTI for an ugly 4x4??

Be strong!  I'm also an a semi-rural dweller and the only one of our small group of neighbours not to have moved over to the dark side.  Course you could do it in style and get an R

I don't think it'll be semi-rural too much longer at the speed they're building, positively metropolitan in a couple of years!

Hmmm an R eh? Stop putting temptation in my way!

SQ5 would suit ya needs!

Is that an Audi or cleaning product Ginge?
