Morning,
I’m not a happy bunny this Morning. I took my car in for its first service yesterday and whilst it was in I asked them to look at the touch screen stereo. It kept changing radio stations and reprogramming itself as well as the touch screen not working all the time.
I also asked them to look into the start/stop system as it seemed to have strange reasons as to why it wouldn’t engage like.... the a/c was on when it wasn’t, the power consumption was high when nothing was on and my personal favourite, the engine needed to being for it to work... when it was running!
Anyway they could not diagnose any issues yesterday and said that my car had no fault codes stored. They confirmed it had been updated when it was recalled a few months ago.
Anyway I get in it this morning and the touch screen would not work at all and once again is scrolled through random stations. I have filmed it so I can show VW when I take it in next week. I was pretty fed up when I spoke to them and it’s booked in next week and they are providing me a car free of charge whilst they investigate.
The problem only seems to occur when the outside temp drops and told VW this when i spoke to them yesterday. The internal temp of my car was set to 20deg and my 35 minute journey to failed to heat the screen up enough to make any of it work.
Has anyone else had these problems? If so what was the solution?
Thanks
Paul

Which unit - Discover Media, Discover Navigation, or Discover Navigation Pro.
I have the last unit (the 8" Pro), and whilst I have had a few random issues (freezing about 4-5 times since new), generally it's very well behaved, and I certainly have had no issues with the screen. Today it was only 3°C when I set off from work and the touch screen worked perfectly.
Out of interest, what is the current firmware on your unit (go to system information and under "Software" it will tell you your current firmware).
As regards the other start / stop warnings, I get these as well and think it's totally normal. Sometimes even when the AC is off, the system will pulse it to keep the refrigerant moving to lubricate the system and also if the Climate control detects a high amount of humidity, it can also override the AC switch and turn it on. Obviously when the AC compressor is running, the engine needs to be running.
Engine needs to be running is normally when the DPF needs a regen (either active or passive) and the Start/Stop system is overridden to keep the engine running to get the Cat up to temperature (I assume yours is a diesel) ? If so, then that's quite normal as well.
I've also found that having the temperature set to higher than about 23°C will cause the start / stop to be deactivated on the warm up phase (something to do with the PET electric heater), and lowering the temp to 23°C or below, usually kicks the SS system back in (on mine it does anyway).

My touch screen (nav pro) froze a couple of times and wouldn't allow me to do anything but this hasn't happened for several months now.
The start/stop seems to be very temperamental. I'm the same as you in that there appears to be no logic as to when it will kick in or not. I can have no AC on at all and it still won't work

Darlo: You weren't wearing gloves were you?

MH - I think, aas i understand it, the issue is the screen is doing stuff without being touched at all!
Sootchucker - good response there and i agree there does seem to be a multitude of reasons whu SS will not work - which does make it seem very random. i turn it off for most journeys - and only ever use it when the engine is up to temperature as turning a cold engine on and off just does not seem prudent to me....
-
Thanks for the posts guys. It the standard stereo system that came on the early mk 7's. Feel a little better about the SS system after your posts. It didn’t kick in at all today with the message "power consumption too high" all the way in (12 mile journey - no a/c or climate on, just headlights/stereo/wipers). I still think it needs a software update to get rid of these gremlins.
The touch screen did work a little this morning but not as it should whereas yesterday it didn’t work at all.
Today’s symptoms were like a delay so if I pressed the screen a few time the screen would play catch up. This can be up to 2 or 3 minutes later.
I have now figured out how to use the steering wheel controls to change the station but you can’t scroll through your pre-sets which is annoying, you just have to go through the DAB lists.
ps..... I wasn’t wearing gloves
I tried checking the software but the touch screen was just not playing ball enough to get to the screen you described. I was assured by VW it had the latest though as it was taken in on a recall a couple of months ago.
Thanks

Ive had it on mine a few times deleting radio logos and rapidly changing channel etc. It does seem to do it more on colder mornings and have had the display completely unresponsive before. Usually press and hold the power for ten seconds to reset the system and clears it.
When in for a service they couldn't find anything wrong and hadn't heard of it before. Can be frustrating when it happens.
-
Just revisiting this topic after searching
My touch screen has a habit of randomly going black, completely unresponsive. Radio continues to play but if you turn it off then its completely unusable. To reset it i had to turn off engine, get out of car, lock/unlock and then start again.
When i called the dealers they seemed to be aware of the problem and mentioned a software update is available so if your having the same issues, get in touch with your local VW...
They gave me a white beetle as a loan car

Mine has frozen twice on really cold days as well as playing 2 radio stations at the same time!!!!
If you hold the power button for 20 seconds or so it reboots and the should be back to normal.

I had the same problem last winter on the Nav Pro, they had to change the front of the whole unit.
I have the climate windscreen, and if the temp dropped to below 3deg, the whole thing wouldn't work, and you couldn't activate the climate windscreen, which was a little annoying............ having to use de-icer !!
Still have the odd issue where the sat Nav freezes, and usually when I'm lost !
but hey it's only over £2000 worth of extras that were a waste of money.
I've a £50 Tom Tom which is far superior !
-
These head units sound like a bag a sh!t to be honest. Is this a common issue with these units and more with the nav pro?
-
To be honest, I love the car despite all the problems I originally encountered( 2013 GTD ) but in future, I'll never add extras to a car again...............
and 2 and half years in, I'm still in negative equity of about £1500 !
though this was originally going to be kept for 5-6 years, but I changed jobs, so it will end up being changed soon.
And with the GTD now available on Mobility, I can see the value going down even further !
-
Negative equity in a car, what's all that about?
-
Same here - and for the same reason. If i had not added 3k of extras I guess my car would be worth around 500 quid less. As it is I have almost 20k to settle the finance instead of nearly 17k :-(

Some people really go over top with options.
I've heard ' I had to have it cos I hate blank buttons on a car' more than once recently
-
Not many physical blank buttons on a GTI/GTD/R I'd have thought.
Most of the extras are activated in menus off of the touch screen, nothing to be "blank" :D
In fact, I can't think of any "blank buttons"
-
I think there may be one or two, might be mistaken though :undecided:
-
There were a few in the Mk6 that folk were getting extras so the buttons wouldn't be blank.
The only ones I can think of in the Mk7 were the heated seats but now they are standard!
Not sure how folk go over the top with their options as its their choice / money. Its a bit like telling someone they shouldn't have got their car in a certain colour!!
-
It was the heated seat button I was thinking of.
As regards to options, get what you want but don't moan when you've lost money when you come to sell😀

Parking Pack and DCC if not optioned would leave two blank buttons I think. Not exactly a bank of blank buttons is it.
-
The "mode" button is there without DCC isn't it? That's how you select the different DCC setups anyway.
I've no idea where the parking function is, but after I wrote that earlier I noticed I do have two buttons right of the gearstick without anything on them.
I'm thinking about applying some stickers to them just to avoid the shame.
Was thinking maybe one for front machine guns and another for oil slick dispenser.

Car was in yesterday....went to pick it up and apparently the software update is ON BACK ORDER?????
How the friggin hell can a software update be on back order? Did they run out of links to copy to a SD Card?!?!?!?!? i was gob smacked

Had my GTi a week now and have noticed the Discover Nav has a mind of it's own.
Appears fine in daylight but at night time I get the same problems as mentioned previously.
You'll press a station and it'll scroll instead. The Nav map appears to become inverted and the pointer will go off the page.
I really don't need this hassle

There's a tech bulletin out about this. I have non navigation hu and had the freezing issue. The bulletin refers to a fault with the connector block, calls up a replacement part which I'm waiting for a stealers phone call to have fitted.
-
Fixed under warranty this week, tech bulletin describes a replacement plug for the head unit due to loose pins, and there's also a software update listed against a large number of vehicles to specifically combat freezing screens.
Mine is non navigation of course.
