Holy CR@#
Someone put a lot of effort and money into this 1.2TSI R replica....

I have three questions:
1)Why?
2)Why??
3)WHY??!!
-
some 'sad' people out there.....
-
Saw this on autotrader last week, he says he's done it because the R is expensive to insure for him but surely that conversion wasn't cheap??

I bet he could've leased an R cheaper right now than he could've leased that 1.2TSI.
I'm sure those modifications would've bumped the insurance up considerably. So about £7k premium over the normal 1.2TSI what it would be worth now on a 13 plate (potentially about 20 months old) to buy an R that isn't an R.
"That's one of those new R's, must be fast as feck!", "no, it's nippy around town."
-
To be fair it looks like a top job but he should never have put R badges on it. The conversion must have cost him a small fortune. I'd also love to know how he managed to source all the parts or if they came direct from VW?
-
Like Craig said, to be fair, it's as good as a copy as I've seen using it seems all genuine parts. Only 2 things strike me:
1. If going to all that expense, why not fit auto lights to go with the "R" Xenon upgrade and
2. If he's just spent all this money and getting it to how he wanted it, why sell it ?
I'd imagine for who ever buys its, it would be a very interesting conversation with the insurance company..........
Insurance company - "Any modifications ?"
Owner - "Hmmm..........where do I start......"

It's funny who trends have moved on. You don't see any of these sort of cars anymore, but thumb through Auto Trader 25 years ago and it was full of XR3i's with RS Turbo body kits and XR4i's dressed up to look like Cosworths. I even know one person that spent a fortune making his 1.6 Cavalier look just like an SRI, only to trade it in for...an SRI 130 :embarrassed:

Was it you dubber?

Might have been.

Crazy! As mentioned above, it appears to be a very thorough job, but the cost of the mods and the insurance premium for all the mods must make it a bit silly?
Not only that, could you imagine how it feels when a real R arrives next to you at the lights? You'd feel like an utter idiot and want to sink into a hole.
Maybe he's selling it because he's realised that a real R isn't out of the question and he's ordered one!
-
That's only £495 more than I traded my gti for. If only I'd seen it before hand I could've nearly had an r :lipsrsealed:
-
It looks to be a detailed conversion and reasonable quality.
BUT
Who's going to pay £17.5k for a 11k mile, 18 month old 1.2 Golf when you can buy an "unmolested example" for about £11k... even if it does look like an R...
I know he's trying to recoup his investment. Given the likely insurance impact of the conversion and the massively shrunken market that might show interest I think he probably needs to re-assess his asking price...
As asked above, why if he has invested that amount of time and money into his conversion... why sell it so soon?
-
A fool and his money...
-
"What have you done with your MK7 today thread" : I turned my GTI into a 1.2T SE.
-
To be honest my first thought was it was a VW press car.....used for photo shoots and cars shows prior to the R being in production. I just cannot believe someone could get hold of all the parts without it costing 20K......never mind the paint job....
Advert does suggest he did the mods....but Ive got my doubts....

I'd be inclined to agree. Common practice to build a mule for showing off before the platform is finished.
-
FAIL.
Anyone else notice it's also missing the black headliner / pillar trims? That's usually a dead giveaway
It's pretty common here (Ireland) to see diesel Golf's tarted up to look like GTI's but usually it's done on a budget (i.e. half arsed) and not to the extremes this guy went to.
-
there was a cha on the R forum talking about doing this but as that is such a friendly informative place that nurtures new members
for me i'd like a R that looks like a 1.2tsi, i i forgot if you order limestone grey they do :)
-
Would it not have been cheaper to buy an R and swap engines?
-

That was my first thought!

Plenty of kids who work in bodyshops do this kind of thing. Why not when you can get the parts at trade and do all the work yourself, it's his car....move along.
-
Why imitate? It's a Golf R without the most important part...the drivetrain, so to me it looks a complete waste of time trade prices or not.
I've never understood misbadging cars either. See a lot of BMW's running around with M badges when they aren't M division. Why do it? The only people that are going to notice are those that actually know there is no M120d.

Sure it isn't "M-Sport" badges you are seeing? BMW are at fault for this, as you can spec any humdrum diesel BMW from the factory in "M-Sport" trim - all show and no go. Similar to Audi with the "S-Line" and VW with "R-Line".
-
Not the trim level, the actual badge.

In life the replica thing is an interesting one as you are in the world of aesthetics and engineering and what motivates people, for me the R is about the engineering and why I wanted one, I assume the replica caters for people who like to be thought to be seen in one
Similar issue for me when it comes to watches and the likes of Rolex, Omega and some TAGs for me is the engineering that goes into these, or do you want to give the impression and have a cheap quartz movement
Currently being going through the same thing on some classic furniture when there are loads of cheap repos but not the real deal
Some people think it is a superficial show of status and probably why they go down that route, some appreciate that things are not just skin deep and are perhaps a bit more discreet

If so, VW wouldn't have let it out of its sight. The car would have been destroyed as soon as its purpose was served.

All BMW M-Sports now have M badges on them from the factory. My g/f's 320d M-Sport was delivered with them on the front wings...
-
Fair enough, I haven't noticed on the newer BMW's.

OR a GTI rep...
