So I bought a replacement bumper for my car the other day (because the previous owner chopped my one up for a fmic) and it looks like the one I've bought is smaller than the one I have (the guy said it was a gti but once I got there I found that it was a tdi)

Can someone confirm that this is definitely the wrong size?
Also I realise that the crash bar / current layout is a complete mess
Cheers, Mo

There is only one UK front bumper for the mk4 is there not? Can't see VW making different bumpers for the different engines. If I had a bumper for sale and you asked me was it a GTI one I'm going to say yes even if it's from a 1.4
In what way do you think it's smaller? even in the pictures they look the same to me
Did you try the new one you got on?
-
Thats exactly what i thought, and yeah i tried putting it on and it wouldn't even slide on to side skirts, it would get like half way then jam, and it just looked smaller on the whole to be honest, like when i put the bumpers inside one another the new bumper had about an inch gap on each side, then when i put the old bumper inside the new bumper it was pushing the sides up a little bit, though my old bumper does have a huge section missing so some of the structural strength is probably gone
-
Side skirt?
-
I cant think of what they're called, its the thing above the bumper and the wheel arch (not the bonnet - between that and the arch haha)
-
Even more lost now lol
Above the bumper?
It just pushes straight on to the two clips on the wings then bolted up with the 5 bolts and the 8 screws in the arch liner.
Get some pictures. (If you can load them straight up to the site)
-
ha i mean the wings!
Also to add to all the annoying problems already, one of the b*stard bolts sheared!
-
bumpers should be exactly the same, only difference is non gti/gttdi models didn't have colour coded rub strips
-
You definitely bought a mk4 bumper and not a mk3.5 on from the cab?
Have you checked the part numbers?
-
It was off a mk4 tdi 2002 model, my car is a 2000 if that would make any difference, but yeah it really didn't want to go on
-
I'm confused :undecided:
The first image looks like your cut up one is smaller then the last picture it looks bigger?! The last picture looks like a polo bumper!?

it's to do with the camera angle, i took a picture from both sides try and highlight it, it just doesn't seem to show it very well
-
Post up the part numbers of the two.
-
in one of your pics they look the same size , are you shaw putting it on right - by sliding it onto the bracket things which are directly below the wings before you start bolting it on ???
-
your not trying to put your new bumber on with your intercooler still in the same place are you
-
The part number is 1J0 807 217c, which is a match / should fit all mk4's
And i moved the intercooler back as far as i could, though i did leave the piping attached. So that might of affected it a bit. I think i'll remove everything this wednesday and try fitting it whilst the intercooler isn't attached at all.
Also yes, I have been installing it correctly, slide it on to the wings first then bolt on, but it wouldn't even slide on to them which has got me this confused :undecided:
-
My guess is pipe work down the o/a of the car
-
As said no difference except rub strips, must be pipe work , unless it is off a 3.5 cab ?
-
Well it was off an 02 plate tdi, so I don't think it was a cab, and yeah, give me a day or two and I'll remove everything that's In the way, and attempt to fit it again
-
As I have fitted standard bumpers to gti's a couple of times , only problem was the fm ic, Your not trying to fit the mounts twice are u ?Lol the slam panel straight ? I bet the fmic is hanging too low ,
-
I pushed the fmic back as far as I could, with the pipes attached, and I've now bought 2 larger silicone couplers, so I should be able to push it back even further. Let's hope that's the problem.
Did anyone have to cut away a bit of the bumper for the pipework?
-
I've finally got round to fitting the bumper, and as one of you said, it was the fmic that offset it too much, I've now pushed the fmic back as far as possible and I have also had to cut a chunk of the bumper off (nothing that can be seen from the outside) it's still sitting a bit offset but I'll have to put up with it for now because it looks like my intercooler is wider than the normal one everyone fits.
