Title: MK3 2.0 16V running problem

I have had my MK3 I6V for years and it always  ran well until last week. When I started it up the tickover began surging up and down to 2000 rpm and the engine started cutting out and then cutting back in again on the road.  It is still doing this.  I have changed relay 30 but it made no difference.  The engine management light doesn't come on.  I am at a loss.  Could it be ECU?

Could be many things, take it to a garage
