Title: HIDs....
Post by: chris1h on 25 October 2014, 14:27
Very touchy subject...

I am absolutely sick of my standard halogens..

Its £500+ for some new xenon headlights which from what i have seen arent even genuine vw and I have no idea how to fit myself..

Hids are my only option.. but what ones.. I have had trouble in the past with my previous car Seat Ibiza. They blew the BCM unit on it..(okay they were some cheapos off ebay). So the thing i am most worried is if they f*ck something up..  or and dont want to look chavy..

 :nerd:

As well as the legalities and dazzling oncoming cars due to light scatter, they will look about as chavy as lights can get.

I made the mistake of not holding out for a Passat with xenons. When I come to change it, I will make sure that the next car has them and in the mean time, just make do.

Ive been looking around for the same, wished I had held out for one with xenons, but the one i was looking at was from a  car supermarket and had a hard life.

Put some Osram H7 off road bulbsin the main beam position. You wont dazzle anyone as you would go to dip beam anyway with oncoming traffic.

Main beams are H15's. A dual filament main/DRL bulb. I'm not sure if there are any upgrades for them yet.

I had some Philips Silvervisions in my first MK6 and they were just as good if not better than the factory xenons on my next car.
I like to see the road way in front of me when I drive (I do a lot of night driving) and factory xenons may look better but have a sharp cut off point for the light so on dipped beam I don't think they are all that great as a £1200 factory option compared to a set of £30 decent bulbs!

I agree with this. The mk6 xenons just have a flap that lets the beam up for main beam, so i think they are worse on main beam than a hologen with a decent bulb, with the mk5 you had the two together which worked really well.

These are the ones I have been looking at. But want to seem how they look and fit first.

if on a budget, I'd just get some high quality bulbs, I've used them before to great effect, if you need more get some xenons off xenonz uk like the link above, and have a high quality HID put in there, and have perfect vision :)

As I've said many times before, these lights have essentially an aftermarket HID kit in them, meaning they take a second or two to warm up to full brightness. Fine once they are on as the bi-xenon lamp serves both dip and main beam via a shutter behind the lens, but not so good when you need full power main beam to flash when the lights are turned off.

I actually have those xenonz reps and 6000k HID's in. Looks the part! Even my local VW dealer loved em. Although what dubber said is right, takes about a second for the HID's to warm up and its damn annoying. Looks chav blue before it goes white!

Local lad! Those DRL bulbs are really hard to reach haha, good luck! One word of warning though if you do go for the xenonz, they're really easy to fit but a pain in the ass to code. You even need to jump a couple wires if you want them working like OEM
