Title: Grinding sound
Post by: golf turbo47 on 21 October 2014, 17:19
Hello all I got a 2001 1.8t Gti & im at a total loss with a problem. I'm sometimes getting a grinding noise coming from the rear when braking to a stop & when I pull away. I've checked rear discs & pads. And also checked front discs & pads and all seems fine. Any ideas what it could possibly be would be a great help?

Cheers.

Have you not already got a set on the back?

Best to strip it down, clean it and rebuild it before bying new ones..my view anyway.

This.

The tiniest amount of corrosion seizes em up and a rubber grease and clean up and most of the time good as gold.

not sure how much they cost etc. cause i get stuff at trade price, however, when i replaced one a few years ago it was about 30-40 quid iirc so proberbly looking at 60+

i do think vw do a service kit type thing with all new seals etc in so could try stripping it down and re building with new parts.

could also try jacking it up and using a pair of mole grips or simelar to move the hand break lever while spraying with some wd40 or some cleaning agent to try and remove any muck/rust etc. worked as a temp repair on mine for a few months prior to replacing the caliper
