i am doing a assignment at college i have been told to pick a engine and write about a common problem with them so i chose a mk2 golf gti 8v engine as i have one but cant think of any problems with the engine?

Does it have to be the engine itself? The electrical stuff and sensors all pack up and they struggles dealing with vacuum problem but that's management again.

You picked an engine known for being bulletproof, and commonly run upwards of 200,000 miles... As mentioned though, there are a plethora of issues with electrical and vacuum stuff though!

I would write about the 1.4 twin charger. You could write a novel about that engine's problems

You've picked the wrong engine there

It does not have enough valves for a start
