Well, a tank of petrol gives me 250 miles to play with, I might have to cut out less important journeys, like going to work

I seem to remember just before i passed my driving test I had a bike lying around somewhere.

Down to half a tank and should fill up really but been a remote home worker techy type I'll work from home for a bit! No fuel no work but how long for this time???

PM Tony is going on about rationing to stop it been a problem open your eyes you have the ultimate solution, solve it by dropping the extortionate tax on fuel which is killing any businesses left in this great land! Seems like the government want to run the country into the ground and we're becoming a third world country with very few home bred businesses left and a supposed recession looming :(

Ahhh rant over :)  best go top Bessie off! just have to hope I don't cover more than 250 miles, Granny driving ahoy :D

It's the same in america. Panic buying has been taking place since that hurricane katrina.
I filled up last week. still got 2/3 of a tank. I'll just bike to work if I run out.

Title: Re: petrol, panic buying
Post by: mrwotto on 12 September 2005, 21:30
this panic buying has not been caused by the goverment tho

Its been caused by the oil companies putting the price of oil up, due to a number of reasons, including hurricane katrina, and the threat of a protest at garages / refinaries accross the country
Title: Re: petrol, panic buying
Post by: Chris_D on 12 September 2005, 21:32
i heard there wasn't gonna be protests at garages or refinaries, just a go slow on the roads?
Title: Re: petrol, panic buying
Post by: Overseer on 12 September 2005, 21:32
^ i heard it was blockades again and go slows.

targetting individual garages unless on a massive scale would acheive nothing. its easier to stop fuel getting out at source and dry the country out that way.

aye tis right, but in america petrol is feckin peanuts per litre!!!

damn were screwed over here

judging by reports on my forum.. they pay roughly a third to a half what we do.

we only pay a tiny bit more than most of europe, apart from holland which is actually more expensive than here.
Title: Re: petrol, panic buying
Post by: mrwotto on 12 September 2005, 21:33
I have got a big shell refinary not far from me and they are threatening to protest there, but its all rumours at the min.

But still its the oil companies that are shafting us

Hmmm I'm not gonna give into it, will be running a bit low tomorrow on way home from work so will try filling up then as usual, could be a very naive attitude but I hate becoming sucked into panic buying of anything.
HOWEVER sunday I've gotta make a long trip in my bus (which aint very economical) to pick up a folding garage to store the golf in this winter. If anything comes between me and the golf protection then I will be mad!!!

Last at midnight the queue was half a mile long in Pitsea, Essex. I can see a petrol station from my office window and it has 15-20 cars queing since 8.45 this morning.

The thing most of the people panic buying are flipping happy shoppers that use car for 50 miles a week! I do 350miles a week minimum and can't get any bloody fuel! I don't mind doing the mileage as means I get to spend loads of time in my GTi, kicking the ar5e out of her. No fuel means no driving:( Hardley any fuel means I get drive her like a GTi coz she drinks fuel like I drink lager!

Ive got my golf filled up, my mums bora (shes away for two weeks) filled with diesil and my newly aquired 1.0 Metro (bah!) is filled, I figure i can drive the metro for about 5 months until it runs out, then ill have about two weeks after that till the bora runs dry, then about 15 minites of driving the golf until the entire tanks dissapears lol.

Good idea! 99% of the British are dumb enough to believe anything I reckon after the last couple of days. Round here (Northampton) most garages have run out of unleaded - people are still bloody queuing though! The rest of the world must just laugh at the UK - not only do we pay more for everything (including fuel) than most other countries, but mass hysteria sets in so easily here...........

I reckon there should be panic buying more often!!! I popped out to grab a sandwich from the BP near work at lunchtime, plenty of parking spaces, empty forecourt, no queing to pay in the shop. Seems like nobody at all needs petrol stations today!!! There were only a couple of people quietly filling up, better be the same story at my local shell garage on the way home coz my tank's in the red.

Got to 1/4 of a tank this morning as I haven't bothered to fill up since last Friday. There were no queues at my local garage, business as usual. I don't get this panic buying at all. There was never any real mention of a blockade, that's the tabloids stirring it up. These are just protests after all. Anyway, just so long as I get to Ragley Hall and back on sunday I don't give a $h1t
