Dear all,
Im getting close to ordering a GTi in a few weeks time, i do however have a real dilemma on my hands.
The choice between 5 and 3 doors, now being a young chap 3 doors feels right, i think it looks better and will be a better image for myself.
however, i do on occasions have mates in the car and the hassle of getting out sometimes makes me think a 5 door is better.
One problem with my current 3 door is the mechanism for the seat to move to let them out isn't great so what I'm asking here is... how easy is it to get in and out of the back of a 3 door and would it be tolerable or should i just bite the bullet and get a 5 door
-
As you said your young so get a 3 door and don't be so bloody lazy.
The questions on this forum are getting dafter by the day
Ps the mechanism is as smooth as silk

It doesn't have to be a compromise on the Golf - yes the 5 door costs more, but it'll be worth £600 more at trade-in time, so it's money set aside rather than money lost if you're buying outright, and if you're doing a lease or solutions, you should find your monthly payment about the same for both 3 door and 5 door.
You need to ask yourself how often you will have someone use those seats, if it's once in a blue moon then get the 3 door, more than once a week and your rear seat passengers will get tired of climbing in rather than stepping into your car.
The Golf is one of those cars that looks good in either 3 door and 5 door - the choice is yours.

I have the three door, personally I think it just looks a tad more sporty which is why I went for it. I have people in the back all the time and never had anybody complain that it's tricky to get in and out of.
-
3 door is less convenient - but IMO it looks better. As I never get in the back I don't care  - so depends on how often you have passengers in your car. The mechanism is spot on though  If you have young kids who need help getting into their seat/putting the seat belt on etc then I'd suggest the 5 door - if not, go with the 3 door.
-
Access is fine to the rear... even my in-laws who are in their 70s don't find it too hard to get in and out...
Seat mechanism is fine and always returns to where it was before you moved it forward...

I have young children and have a 3 door. Works well, dont see any downsides to it at all.
Even if they are very young and need assistance with belts etc, it works in your favour. you can climb in with them and sit on the back of the front seat.. that way you wont get a wet back if it is raining.
3 door all the way.

I still think the 5 door looks better proportioned but we don't want this to be a 3 door v 5 door handbags

3 door all the way. A 5 door GTI just looks completely wrong.

Just say 5 door, mcmaddy keeps an anvil in his handbag and he's got a canny swing!

I just think the proportions of the 5 door are slightly better than the 3 door. Not many cars around that the 5 door still looks great in.
-
This GTD is my first 5 door i've bought in 7 new VWs, it always surprises me just how handy those 2 back doors are, and sometimes the massive doors of a 3 door variant are a real pain in a busy car park with narrow spaces.
It is one of the few cars that looks good in both variants (without having to look like an estate e.g. A3)

The Golf GTI has always been known as the most rounded family hatchback money can buy including it's great level of practicality.
So how can a 5 door GTI look "completely wrong"?
I've had 3 doors and I've had 5 doors. I would never buy a 3 door again because everytime you go to give someone a lift you have to kick your passenger out (probably in the rain if you're in the UK too).
Let's see the benefits of 5 doors;
-Smaller sized doors for narrow car parks.
-Passengers can easily get in your car.
-You can put things on the back seats of your car easier if your boots full.
-You don't have to constantly slide your chair back and forth everytime a passenger wants to get in.
-Your rear passengers don't have to wait for the front passengers to get out the car before they can get out.
-Higher resale value if you decide to sell the car in the future.
Benefits of 3 door;
-Weighs a little more but doesn't affect performance figures.
-Apparantly looks a little better (I personally don't think it makes any difference to how good the car looks)
-Costs a bit less.
I'd take the 5 door everyday. I've lost count of how useful those back doors have been. Oh and I'm in my mid 20's so also a young lad with no kids!

I have a 4 bed house" just in case" we have family or friends who want to stay over.. rarely happens ... same with needing 5 doors. So to sum up if your popular and like giving people a lift go for the 5 door. If your are like me and have bought the car for you ... 3 door
-
5-door is far more practical vs 3-door which is far more sleek - it's that simple :smug:
-
Don't forget 3 door requires you to be supple to reach that all evasive seat belt
-
Either one a winner

Think this is a very important question myself as once decided on it you have to then live with it for how long have the car.
My previous 2 cars were 3 Door Audi and chosen as we all do, for the love of the lines of the 3 Door, but second time around the complete hassle of passengers getting in and out drove me to complete frustration and next car had to be a 5 Door!
It was bad enough when family were getting in and out and they all female and tallest is 5ft 6in but friends was worse given the wide selection of height and sizes.
Problem at the times was the Audi Sportback looks like an estate but this is when the MK7 Golf stepped in, which has truly great lines in the 5 Door guise.
Not regretted moving to 5 Door one bit as its transformed an ongoing frustration into a non issue and the car still turns heads.
If you carry passengers regularly and most of friends are of decent height and size then go for 5 door you will not regret it.
If its just you and another most of the time, then the 3 Door is your option.

5 doors look much better proportionately as well as being practically superior.
The Golf is a big car these days, so needs the extra doors to look right. It's a different story with the Mk2, which is tiny by comparison and suits the 3 door profile.
-
Personally I think 3 door looks far better. . .
Don't get a 5 door just because you pick you friends up and you cba getting out of the car for 5 seconds
-
I have a 3 door GTI, my wife has a 5 door GTD - they both look awesome, but its all down to personal preference at the end of the day - the 5 door is slightly more practical if you have passengers all the time, the 3 door looks slightly better in terms of the sportiness (IMO, which is why my R will be 3 door) - but they both look the nuts, I don't think either is any better or worse than the other

Me too - although I have never had anyone in the back... I have tried it myself and its fairly easy to get in and out. I think the five door comes in to its own if you have children that you need to secure in a seat or perhaps elderly relatives.....
-
Gone for 3 door myself as I won't need 5 doors - A6 Avant in the household for bulky loads/dog/friends etc
-
Im the oldest child, my family currently have a big car in the form of a cls shooting brake (harbouring a 5.5litre twin turbo, just to blow off the boring estate image) so as it stands 3 door will be fine, but the cls is going next september and dads itching for a 911 so that would mean we would have 2 2seaters a fiat 500 and my golf. It is likely to become the family outing car (few and far between as both i and my sister are older now). does this sway it? i just don't know

I've got a 16 year old and a nearly 19 year old son(s) and they fold perfectly well into the back of my 3 door GTI. Teenagers are quite flexible.
My outlaws on the other hand are a little less flexible and don't fit too well in the rear seats but it's not really an issue as they have free bus passes and only moan about my driving anyway…
-
we have got this covered by going for 3 and 5 door Rs, main reason i have the 5 door Polo as a daily hack is i can get the parents in and out the rear
