Title: Mileage out of front tyres
Post by: mbradbrook on 11 October 2014, 14:52
Afternoon all,

My front tyres have only done 6k and are down to the wear indicators on the centre of the tyre. The tyres are Continental Sport Contact 5 which have just come out top in the Evo magazine test. They are inflated to the minimum pressure (38psi) but seem to wear mainly in the centre section. The outer treads have around 4mm left. What does everyone else get out of their front tyres? The car is a 59 plate GTI which has a Bluefin remap.

Cheers

Matt

Depends how a car is driven, more wheelspin equals less mileage, so no two cars will be the same. I never spin wheels and get at least 20K miles out of front tyres.

  6k

I also run conti sport contact 5p's (19") year round.  I got 13k miles out of my fronts before they needed changing when down to 3mm.  Mine are always inflated as per the recommended on the fuel filler flap, which, in my case is 41psi.  I think they are a great tyre.

Centre tyre wear is often attributed to over inflation, though you'd have to be running pretty high psi to get that much more wear than on the outer edges. Is the tyre gauge you are using accurate?  Maybe drop them a couple psi but I wouldn't drop much below the recommended.

Are you a serial wheel spinner?

I got 14500 miles out of my conti contact 2's and they still had a little bit left to give.

I changed my Bridgestone Potenza's at around 24.5k when I put my new wheels on, and they still had around 4mm of tread left on the fronts.

I'm running Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's now, and don't expect to get as many miles out of them, but I didn't like the Bridgestones, so changing my wheels gave me a good excuse to change my tyres.

I like to put my foot down when the conditions permit but I'm definitely not in to wheel spin! I use a Pcl digital tyre inflator which I presume would be pretty accurate. I've compared this to the halfords digital pressure gauge which won the auto express group test and they are within 1psi of each other. Interestingly I've also got a Pcl pencil type gauge and this reads around 3psi higher. I think I may run my front tyres 2-3psi lower on the next set.

I run mine at 36 and the bridgestones have worn more on the edges. I have 4mm left on mine at 12.5k.
Its mainly down to driving style. You could be heavy on the brakes as well causing them to ware quicker.

I know that my Golf only has a feeble amount of power, but the front Dunlops have done 16k so far and are down to between 3 and 4mm

It is only ever myself in the car so maybe 38psi is too much. It is only the centre quarter of the tyre that is worn - there is plenty on the sides. What pressure gauges do others use?

I use this.  Readings have always been accurate and easy to use.

225/40/18 XL PS3s 38psi 20k miles on the front, 45-50k on the back. GTD. on my 4th set front and 2nd set back. 76k miles and soon need to replace the tyres.

Similar here for me, and as I said when I mentioned this a few months ago, I drive like an old man  They are without a doubt the quickest wearing tyres I've come across. I'd never buy them again.

Tyre tests are only a guide. Tyre size 16/17/18/19 give different results with the same make of tyre. The EU labelling for noise for example often gives different values depending on size. Should not have worn in 6k though. Perhaps the black marks on the road from traffic lights has something to do with the wear!
