The headlight beam bend doesn't work in Eco mode (who drives in Eco mode I hear )
The turn assist light (beside the fog light) doesn't work in Eco either
You cannot turn off the rear parking sensors (perhaps a fall back from when they offered rear cameras) even when you think you have.
Finally, you noticed how the centre (hub) of the wheels rust. "Its on all cars" apparently - well except the other marques Ive looked at.
-
The headlight beam bend and turn assist is not active in Eco to save power and therefore fuel
-
What do you mean by turn off the rear park sensors? Why would you want to?
-
In my experience, Volvo XC90, Golf GTI MK5, Porsche Boxster and Cayenne and some others along the way, the brake discs all 'rusted' in the wet. Drive in the dry for 5 minutes and that soon rubs off. Is this what you meant by the hub?
-
No he does not mean rust on the friction surface of the brake disc.... he means the hub, i.e. the thing that the discs are bolted too....
My rear hubs rust too.... and have for a long time (the car is not a bit over 10 months old).

In 11 months I've never even tried Eco mode.
Surely the fuel savings just by cutting out bits of electrical functionality would be so minimal it would almost be insignificant unless you were down to you last two millilitres of fuel and the nearest pump was a mile away?

Every time i've used ECO in the GTI and the R i've got worse fuel economy (indicated) than any other mode, it's definatley the smoothest mode but also feels the most sluggish.
-
eco whåt????
-
Strange, my hubs have been painted silver and look totally different from the Mk6
In fact the Mk6 hubs were rusting when I picked it up. I doubt very much if the Mk7's on mine will rust.

When the car was new I'd activated the ACC and the car didn't seem to accelerate when I kept pressing the add speed button. Then I pressed the set button and found myself accelerating very quickly towards 100mph!
-
No volume mute on the steering controls or head unit. Or am I just being totally blind?
-
its the voice control button on RHS
-
its the voice control button on RHS
Obviously
Cheers I'll give this a go. If you have voice control though won't it beep and then ask for a command?
-
We don't have a volume mute button on the steering wheel. The only way to mute is to turn the volume down (nav pro)
-
No drain off on the windscreen cill meaning water buildup on the passenger side is a very odd design flaw imo
-
Had my first taste of what VW must consider emergency braking. Came out of a side road and with nothing behind me I gunned it towards a green light that was 70:30 to change before I got there. Sure enough it changed and I braked, not ridiculously hard. When I came to a stop I thought that I must have left an indicator on. The car had activated my hazards for me.

And do you think you can measure the power/fuel saving of the active beam and turn assist lights? Do you notice a difference in performance between when you have the heated rear windscreen on? Or between headlights on or off?

That extra 40 yards you can go on a full tank when the lights are in eco mode make all the difference.

I'd agree ECO mode does not do anything, apart from making the car more sluggish, put your foot to the floor and the power does kick in.
I've used it on runs to work and not found it any better than I do in "Normal" mode ( fuel consumption wise anyway)
Had my Gti for 10 months now, 15000 miles , much more than I'd like it to have done but doing 25 mile runs to work and 25 miles to my sons football it all adds up.
I've found, which will come as no surprise to anyone, the fuel consumption is still very good, considering days of old. My focus ST did about 25mpg if I was lucky
-
I've not done any proper fuel checks and cover a low mileage but generally I find the MK7 GTI gets more miles out of a tank than either of my MK6's or MK5 did despite a smaller tank.

Odd for me (even after a year of ownership), is the backwards step of not allowing any real functionality of the bluetooth system from the DIS display (the screen between the instrument clocks) using the steering wheel controls.
Only your last call list is present, whereas on my older Scirocco, you could retrieve the complete phone address book and quickly search for a contact by scrolling (and holding the scroll button down would quickly change between alphabet letters). Now, (certainly on Nav Pro at least), VW want you to either using the voice control (which can be very flaky at best), of use the touchscreen whilst driving).
A backwards step I think.
Oh, and whilst I'm ranting, why is it that we GTD, GTI & R owners get a nice colour DIS display as standard, yet apart from the door open warning graphic, most things are monochrome (Nav directions for instance). If you ever look at the new A3 model with the colour display, everything uses colour and looks much higher quality as a result !

Totally agree with this. A colour display only showing black and white graphics and completely missing out being able to choose and dial a number (which I could on my mk6) is pretty backward. Progress I guess!

My exact thought since taking delivery of my GTD. There should be a lot more colour in the "colour MFD". If I had paid for it as a spec option (which I did have initially when the specs were still in the air) I would have felt jipped. My stance on this has softened slightly in the last few weeks though as I had a loan car the standard MFD. The standard not only misses the colour but also the subtle animations and fades when swapping between screens. They should have called it the animated MFD (there would be less complaints).

Lols. But doesnt that strike you as daft?. People who drive in Eco don't need help like "normal" people? Id be interested in knowing how much more electric (therefore petrol) that this facility uses. Perhaps this shows the desperation car makers go to to make their mpg figures go as high as possible

You couldn't measure it... I think it would make more difference if you went for a number 2 before you set off...
Does ECO mode stop the heated rear window from working? I'm almost certain that it a much bigger draw than the bendy headlights...
-

Im not sure how to explain it better. You can turn off the front facing sensors but not the rear facing sensors. Matters not why Id want to but since you ask :) I guess Ive parked a car for 25 years without them and having to take my eyes off parking the car to check what is beeping is counter intuitive to me.
-

If you were towing a trailer or heaven forbid a caravan you may want to turn them off when maneuvering otherwise they would get to be a major pain in the a**e
-
I think all of the "convenience consumers" power cutting in eco mode is actually a cross platform thing that comes from the electric and hybrid Golf models.... in those it makes a difference and the feature is just blanket across the range - VAG standardisation across MQB I would suspect.
You'd think there would be a software flag on non-electric ones though, whatever the German is for "I'm not a lentil knitting hippy freak, i burn dinosaurs and I'm proud of it" ;-)
-

I would strongly suspect that they automatically get disabled when you connect something to the tow bar socket.
The car certainly knows if you connect something up (as it will disable the s/s rubbish).
-
The bolsters dont heat up at all with the heated seats. So while your bum is roasting you have the strangest cold feeling down the side of your legs.
It has actually put me off using them although it was one of the first options I ticked.

Correct they do disable when towing. @night blue you don't need to take your eyes of the road to look at the screen when parking. If you are reversing your rear sensors are beeping and when you move forward to park your front sensors bleep.
-
I still cant get my head around the side mirrors and their functionality.
Unless i'm doing something wrong, they passenger side only auto-dips with reverse when the selector knob is pointing at left. Though if it's doing that, it wont heat up with the rear demister, for that, you have to select something else.
Also, Postcode search on the Nav. WHY NO SELECT ABC FIRST GOLF?!
-
Passenger mirror is the only that dips on reverse and you need to toggle the switch to the left. You dont need your rear demister on for the wing mirrors to defog. You get used to the Nav after a while.
-

I asked myself the same question - to understand why think where it's programmed => Germany.
Most of Europe has managed to number their houses ok and you can find any place with StreetName 123 and a four to five digit [numbers only] post code... and so the Germans make you push another button to make letters appear. Silly you can't change letters as default thou.

Given the lenghts VW go to make the golf lighter, i have just weighted the driver manual, aswell as taking up most of the glove box it weights just over 1.1kg.
As i have never looked at it in 6 months of car ownership i have now put it in the drawer in my hallway.
Blinding!

Good call. You car is probably now saving more fuel than Eco mode.

Haha!
The low washer fluid indicator annoys me, cones on and has what looks like a serious triangle stamped on the DIS and pings too much!
Also having a one year old who's car seat in in the back, keyless entry (got it for this very reason) doesn't work on the back doors, so I have to go to the front then move back. Minor but seriously annoying!
-
You are right about the washer fluid indicator, most annoying thing.
I had it on for almost 2 weeks and it still hadn't run out, then it took a good 10 mins to fill it back up!
Not sure why it needs to come on so soon..
-
I'm pretty sure that the washer bottle holds more than the fuel tank......
