Title: Engine Coolant for MK7 GTI
Post by: Mr Savage on 01 October 2014, 09:37
My lights popped up to check engine coolant levels. Yes I've forgotten to keep an eye on it :(

What type are we meant to be topping up with? Isit still G40 stuff that's best?

I don't have my manual close by so can't check. Hoping to pick some up on my way home.

I had the Engine Coolant warning shout at me last - I've never put Engine Coolant in a car before, but needed to top it up to the mark, so it is something that needs keeping your eye, although I do question if it was filled enough upon PDI - would it have used that much over 11 months & 14,000 miles of motoring?

I had a coolant alarm light pop on a few months ago and the VW garage topped me up free of charge on the day.

I have however also been informed during my first service that there was a coolant leak (!?) and they're taking it in to repair under warranty next week.

G13 from VW is what you need.

My GTD used a reservoir of coolant in about 9K, which is worrying. There's no sign of leakage, and none was found during the service recently. I topped it up, and am keeping an eye on it.

Not sure where it's going!

I had the warning light the other week.

Level was on minimum post PDI and stayed like that for months. When the warning light came on, it was well below minimum.

Topped up with G13 and keeping an eye on it.

Great it seems the only place you can get G13 from is a VW dealer?

They can top mine up for free tomorrow then! Strangely the light didn't illuminate at all on the way home stuck in heavy traffic.

G13 and the correct VW rating.

G13 and the correct VW rating.

That's cheap.

Just ask for a bottle from VW. My dealership had no issue letting me pick up a brand new bottle for gratis.

But what I'm concerned by is how is the coolant level even dropping? Mine was around an inch below the minimum mark very worryingly for a sealed chamber on a car only 1 year old and only covering 10,000 miles? Never had to top up coolant before.

At 8.8k mies, coolant level is in the upper middle mark of the reservoir. :nerd:

Buy coolant additive from VW/Audi/ Seat or Skoda dealer to ensure compatibility with what's already in the tank.

Mince came from PDI only topped to the minimum.

The coolant from euro car parts is exactly the same stuff as it is filled with already, meets all the VW standards and the manual says that you can top up and mix as long as it is G13 and pink. It says don't mix with brown or non-G13.

Mine was low from the start also.

Topped up with distilled water about 5k ago, it's been steady since.
