Title: Do I change from mk2 to mk4?
Post by: matty1664 on 28 September 2014, 19:30
Hi all!

My second child is iminently about to be born and I'm wondering whether or not I should be driving about with my whole family (including dog) in a 23 year old mk2 golf or something a bit newer/safer?

Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my mk2 which is a 1991 8v gti.  Just thinking what others would do in my situation.  Am I irresponsible to be loading up an old mk2 golf with my whole family in this day and age?  Is it a stupid decision to give up my mk2?  I have no idea what to do????  At least with a mk4 I would have a bit more piece of mind (from a safety perspective) and could still enjoy golf ownership and start a new project.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Buy a Bora  (There well down on price plus big boot)  keep the mk2 for weekends away with the other half.

I would do everything I could to keep the mk2, however I must concede I wouldn't feel happy driving my whole (if I had kids) family in it.

Mk4 will spend just as much time in the Garage. .....
Keep it if you can and get a family hack for the shopping

Would rather have a golf than a bora as I have a dog so I need a hatchback really.  Such a hard decision, I am completely torn!  Can't really afford to run another car as a daily runner as that would mean more tax, insurance and servicing each year.

Could you stretch to a mk5? Still plenty of room but a bit more fun?

This. They are a far far better car to drive.

Agreed, a much better all round car.

The extra outlay for a mk5 will make itself back in terms of driver satisfaction.

Thanks for all the replies.  I have had a mk5 before and yes they are good cars but they are just out of reach price-wise for me at the moment, mk4s are more in my budget.  I think for now I will keep the mk2 and see how I get on with the family.  I know if I got rid of it I would definitely regret it.

Anymore suggestions much appreciated.

Cheers guys

Matt

Tell the wife and kids to get the bus that way they are safe and you get to keep your mk2... Use the money from the mk4 to get yourself a sleeping bag cos your gonna be on the sofa

Perfect.  If the mk2 don't work then get a mk4. Could always get a mk4 estate too. Or passat estate, a4 avant.
