Any ideas of it will suffer the chain tensioner issues? What about the golf R?

The Rs the same. Only time will tell as they have another revision of the tensioner over the last of the mk6 ones.

Speaking of noises, when I was out on my test drive in the R, the engine note (beneath the soundaktor output) sounded a little metallic. If I was in an old car I'd think the tappets needed doing. Heard my GTD ticking over from the outside this morning and a similar noise was heard. Is this a common VAG engine trait now?

I think compared to my previous Scirocco (140ps TDI), that the new GTD engine is quite noisy and much more "dieselly" than the Rocco which for a diesel amazed me how quite it was at tick over. There's no mistaking that my GTD is an oil burner though !

Sootchucker - yes the last engine did sound a little more refined, the 170 also had a nicer sounding Soundaktor output than the GTD does too. The BMW diesels sound very clattery at idle, VAG seemed to step back towards that noise with the new engine - maybe it's hard to avoid when they squeeze an extra 14ps out of pretty much the same engine?
