Title: YAAAAY I got a G60
Post by: Nicka on 21 September 2014, 20:51
Hello everyone,
So after 3 flights, and 19 hours of driving time, I made it back to Norway (Where I now live) with the G60. All I can say is "What a Car". Loved every minute of driving it!
I got there, and fell in love with it straight away. Checked the bodywork, and it was clean with no signs of accident history etc. Hardly any rust. It drove very well, actually like new. The gears were tight, and so was the car in general. So I am pleased with the car.
I have noticed on my journey back, a couple of niggles, but that is to be expected.
Maybe someone can help... the engine is making a tapping noise, but it comes and goes. (I am thinking the tappets) but not sure. I believe it is a common problem. Saying that, the car hasn't really been driven for 8 years. Service was done last month.
Also, A knocking noise towards the rear of the car. Sounds like it's coming from near the exhaust back box, or maybe from the back wheel somewhere. It usually happens when I go over a bump or take a corner.
All in all, very happy with it.
And many thanks to everyone who commented on the thread for your advice.
I wouldn't have brought it if without your opions.

A quick pic, as I was driving back.

Nice motor.

What grade of oil went into it on the service?  Synthetic?

Knocking at the back is likely to be the exhaust on the rear beam, assuming it's a 2WD, not a Syncro.

Looks good.

Hydraulic tappets are a good bet if it's sat a while. Knocking noise should be easy enough to diagnose. Exhaust heatsheild, spare wheel accessories insecure, worn top mounts.

Hi, and thankyou for you comments. I believe the previous owner used Mobil 1 Fully synthetic 5W-50....... I don't know if it is the right one, or which is best recommended. Please advise.
Still searching for the knocking noise, really doing my head in. Also hard to get under the car without a ramp, as it's just too low. lol.

Grab the tailpipes and give them a shakes. If it knocks about then you know that's your problem.  Mobil 1 is way too thin got the G60 go with 10w40 fully synthetic.

You need to run a 10-40 semi synthetic oil. O.e quantum is my preferred choice for all things VAG.

This is the stuff....

Great, will get the oil changed asap. Maybe that will help with the noise coming from the tappets.

Awesome. It did look like a minter.

When does it make a tapping noise? At around 3000rpm?

Tapping noise comes on and off (mostly on), when stationary. I think it also happens whilst driving the car, but the exhaust sound overpowers the tapping noise.
