had my mark 3 golf a little over 4 months now and never missed a beat. was driving home a few days ago when the engine just stopped revving, kept pressing the throttle and nothing happened. stopped in lay by and car cut out, managed to get it going again and got it home but now it wont start at all, had a look at the HT leads, the rotor arm and spark plugs but they are all fine. anyone any ideas?

Has it got spark, if not then check the coil.
-
its got a spark, looked at the coil too :/ .. im stumped

what model of mk3 is it?
yeah, that'd be really good to know...
engine code please...

Checked the fuel pump and ecu relays? When you turn the ignition on can u hear a whining noise (fuel pump)

you know what, i havent no .. dont hear anything except it coughing :( .. as for the engine code, its a bit dark! will get it tomorrow!

Turn ignition on and listen for the whine noise. That will be the fuel pump priming
-
right, got it started!! will run for about 5 - 10 mins and then cut out again, rev counter will hit zero while engine still running, and the oil and battery light will flash at me .. been told it might be the engine speed sensor? is that right?
-
Yes it might be the hall sender, but that will only stop it running on engines that don't have a crank sensor as well, so spit out the engine code already?!
with engine code I can also tell you correct part number and possibly give you instructions on how to change it ;)
-
haha, sorry .. engine code is AGG 174 898 :)
-
Check the crankshaft sensor + wiring... it lives behind the oil filter flange.
-
Duff fuel pump or ecu relay. After 5 mins seems like a dud relay
-
I'd also look at cleaning the throttle body
-
was crankshaft sensor .. will upload a pic of what mine looked like aha
