I've just read the EVO tyre test fro 2014. They used a MkVII Golf GTI as the test car.
Out of the 10 tyres that were tested the Bridgestone S001 came last overall.
Not really a shock :D

Wow, well done VW :)
Just had a google, and this looks to be the final scores? CS5's on top.
I was lucky and got CS3's on my GTD, so assume would rate pretty well also.
1 Continental 95.8
2 Pirelli 93.6
3 Goodyear 92.1
4 Yokohama 90.5
5 Michelin 89.8
6 Vredestein 89.2
7 Toyo 88.2
8 Hankook 87.8
9 Dunlop 87.2
10 Bridgestone 85.2

Which issue is this in? I must get a copy!

I'd be amazed if you got conti 3's on your gtd. They supply conti 2's from the factory. What pirellis and what Goodyear's did they test?

201, might not be in the shops yet though.

Ha, my bad - they are indeed 2's :)

Anyone know if the mk7 was fitted with Bridgestone's at launch or have they become standard fit since?
Price apart, I don't understand why they fit them in preference to the Conti's
-
If anyone is needing new tyres soon, the Michelin PS3s are now only £108 a corner fully fitted, and they have a promo on for £30 cashback (or was it a Costco voucher?) on a pair, effectively making them £93 each fully fitted.
GTI-J: They use a variety of tyres, mainly ones that are obsolete from a retail point of view. The variety is so they're not putting all their eggs in one basket, only having 1 supplier. 3 or 4 different suppliers ensures they're always assured of a reliable supply.

i'd go for the Michelin Super Sports over the PS3s if you are serious about your tyres, i now see why the premium boys put them on oem, A wet rating and in the dry these are in a different league and had no drop off when getting hammered today, cleaned up in 50 miles and just great on a road

The conti 5s are indeed an excellent tyre.
I replaced the horrible Bridgestones with them on my mk6. The difference was amazing.
Grip, noise and fuel economy were noticeably better.
I'll be doing the same soon on my mk7 even though they've only done 16k, fronts at 3mm but I've just got to get the Contis.

Hm. An interesting article. However just to add a few bits...
Firstly it was tested on 17" wheels i'm guessing the rest of Europe have 17" alloys as standard instead of 18" standard like we do in England hence the test. Obviously this wouldn't make much difference as the tread pattern is the same but a slight difference.
Also the Continental Sport Contact 5 came first however my understanding is that while this may be a very solid tyre it wears incredibly quickly, almost twice as fast as the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's.
The Pirelli P7 does grip incredibly well as I have a friend who used to have a set on his little Lupo but I think we're forgetting the most important part.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's are the cheapest tyre out the 3, are the best consistent all rounders finishing amongst the top 3 consecutively in all tests and so in my opinion is the best all rounded tyre money can buy right now and what better tyre is there to put on an all rounded car like the Golf GTI? It's still the tyre i'm choosing when it comes to change time.

I'm coming up to the wear markers my standard Bridgestone front tyres. I've only done 8.3k in the GTI, i see that as fairly high tyre wear?
What do people recommend for next time? Hoping to purchase fairly soon!

If you are a Costco member i'd strongly recommend the Michelin PS3s. They might not be the very best (Asy F1s), but they're so close to it - grippy in all conditions, decent wearing, good on the road noise, and best of all the price is amazing - £108 a corner fully fitted and a £30 Costco voucher to boot with a pair of tyres bought. At 11k miles, my Brigestones are about 1.5mm above the markers. Now i'm switching to the R in March, I will probably rotate my tyres so I don't have to buy any (but will probably get an unrepairable puncture shortly after ).
Costco won't grind your wheels swapping the tyres over either, as some of the nominated black circles monkeys can (and have in my experience).

They tested the new version of the Asymmetric 2 (wet A / fuel C) make sure you get this version when you order!
The old one was fuel E

I've just changed my front tyres (the chap said Lewis Hamilton would be proud of my tyre wear ) - I had Pirelli's on it and they were pretty good to be fair. As I'm chopping my GTI in I only put the cheaper Dunlop Sport Maxx on (I hate them) so I'll report back how they are, but having had them before I'm guessing they are going to be sh!te. But they were £100 per tyre cheaper than what I would have put on if I'd been keeping my car.
-
Dunlop Sportmaxx - had them on my first Scirocco and 3 out of 4 tyres were shagged through the first winter by tyrewall bulges after hitting the most minor of potholes - and that was 18"ers - i would imagine the 19"ers are even more susceptible.

I had the 18's on my mk 6 GTI - worst tyre imaginable. Like I said, I would not have put them on had it not been that I am getting rid of the car. I would imagine the 19's are going to be awful but they are a means to an end
