Hi all, I'm in strange territory here, lol, but my dad just called and his mk4 golf 1.4 16v has no brake lights at all. He checked the fuse and ok, and bulbs ok, so I suggested the brake light switch, he's had a look at it and can operate it by hand, but should it click? Cos it isn't? Also as I don't have the car or any knowledge of them, how is it wired up, is it permanent live to the switch then through fuse box? Or does live come from the fuse to the pedal? As he's checked the fuse and has no live on either side, ignition on or off..
Any help/advise appreciated as he's a bit stuck cos he needs it for commuting, :(

Open boot, pull off the wiring boot on the right hand side near boot hinge and check for snapped wires. Check left side as well.

Cheers, I'll tell him to have a look :)

Also, from further googling, there is a 12v feed to the pedal on red/brown wire, then a red black wire goes to the lights, so worst case, he could run a new supply wire if no supply, or run a new feed to back of car, but I'll get him to check the boots, but I would imagine fuse would pop if there was a break as it would short on metal, but it's worth a check :)

Oh sorry thought you had said new brake light switch.
Check wiring then I would take brake switch out and test with a multimeter.

The brake light switch on my AGU (had the older more simple brake light switches) worked by hand but was a little intermittent as some of the plastic had worn away.
