does any1 no where i can find a write up on a conversion
step by step stuff so i no what im in for

Post by: Mr Blue on 12 September 2005, 09:30
engine will drop in alrite i guess

The wiring loom might be a pain though. ive heard that you need a cutsom exhaust and stuff built up but im no expert

you have to think about stopping power too. crap 8v breaks wont be good enough

i think you need a few extras, not just engine and loom. it makes it easier if you have a late spec fuse box (with hazards on steering column) in terms of wiring. you need a vibratechnics engine mount, they do a specific one for the conversion. like blue said i think the exhaust needs a proper manifold to do it properly. a corrado radiator fits better and then you'll have to decide what drive shafts you use, if you'll stick to 4 or change to 5 stud hubs etc. and you may need different springs up front just to cope with the extra weight a vr6 has.

Title: Re: dead
Post by: VR6_ROB on 13 September 2005, 22:39
yeah I got lots of info it goes straight in I went to hear it runnin yesterday beefy as hell loved it
n reg its out of 90k which aint to bad and its chipped

some guy i was askin if he wud put engine in was saying i had to:

get g60 mounts
jumper harness or summat
4 pot princess breaks
seam weld my bay i think he said every inch
stainless steel exhaust tunnel
subframes

full of crap n wantin money out of me basically
so im doin it myself as lots of people said it goes straight in
just need some lifting gear to get it in n mine out
Title: Re: dead
Post by: Mr Blue on 13 September 2005, 22:49
think you will need to drill holes in the firewall for the cable change wires aswel

seem welding the whole engine bay is abit extreme but it wouldnt hurt to get it done after all it is a beefy lump

Good luck rob and much respect for having the balls to give it a go yourself.
Title: Re: dead
Post by: topher on 14 September 2005, 09:30
no need to seam weld anything, you will want beefier mounts though, 16v or G60 should do it. If you're using the vr6 brakes ( you really really really should upgrade your brakes somehow) then you'll need to do a hub swap or just use the entire vr6 drive train, either way that will leave you with 5 studs at the front so your wheels wont go back on
wiring shouldnt be too much of a git since you have a 90 spec with the later loom already

your front suspension will be as useful as a chocolate teapot too, get it swapped.

Good on ya rob! If you need any help or tools then let me know and i will see if i can help (i.e the missus lets me! lol) All in exchange for a go when y done!

You keep saying that you need something to lift the engines. The whole front of a mk2 comes off you know making it real easy to just wheel the engine into place with a skateboard/trolley jack bodge up device.
Title: Re: dead
Post by: VR6_ROB on 14 September 2005, 18:38
wont my suspension be ok as its alreayd lowered n stiffened?
Title: Re: dead
Post by: topher on 14 September 2005, 18:52
give it a try, if it feels soggy with the extra weight up front then its time to upgrade.
Title: Re: dead
Post by: VR6_ROB on 14 September 2005, 21:18
right folks i nearly go tfront end out front bumper is in way now i think i found bolts to take it off 2 either side
but if i undo these will the engine drop at all? as they seem to be attatched to a mount by the looks of it
Title: Re: dead
Post by: ...joe on 14 September 2005, 21:38
ha ha if you can't take a bumper off how you gonna take an engine out!!!

but yeah two bolts either side, engine wont fall as its held in on the cross member which is held on by the two outer bolts by the bumper bolts. don't go drving with no bumper though, as they do help hold it all together.
Title: Re: dead
Post by: VR6_ROB on 14 September 2005, 22:23
right ive done that bumpers off but...
they was small little bolt inbetween the bumper ones as i did this it snapped and other sides
rounded off so bit of work next itme i have a bash at it but its lookin bare iwll post pics up soon

Rob i came across a new guy setting up a garage for VW's last night. He does any conversion you want and knows his stuff. He drives a vr6 mk2 that he did himself so im sure he can help if you get stuck. He is based opposite the shops at Port Clarence. Rough i know but closer than most other garages. Ive got his number if you wanna give him a ring.

Post by: VR6_ROB on 17 September 2005, 17:58
I need help
i not been workin on it for a few days
but i want this engine out now so i can get the vr6 in
but what do i do to remove it

i dont no if i am right but i am taking driveshafts out tonite so there not attatched
then i will unbolt the exhaust, then i will label all the wiring so i know where it came from
and take that out

but how do i make engine be not bolted on to anything at all
soz if i sound bit thick i not done anything like this and i fancy it been fixed within
next week or so
Title: Re: dead
Post by: kniterider on 17 September 2005, 18:05
undo the drive shafts from the gearbox, undo the engine mounts and any connecting pipe work/wiring... wouldnt worry to much about the wiring as its all gonna be different anyways but yeah u could label it just in case....

easy, once youve removed the front cross member and the engine gear box mounts you can just walk it out... well that how i stripped an old 16v i had...
Title: Re: dead
Post by: VR6_ROB on 17 September 2005, 19:01
the front cross members out petrol wont go all over will it because it aint sent through unless pump is on is it
sounds straight forward then should have it out tonite

my m8 came to help me out today well he was watchin and i told him to tilt the car as i was takin rear bumper off to get car in garage further in a little gap and what did he do leaned on my panel underneath passenger side window pushin car
with his feet on wall i was takin bumper off at the time after he had ogne i noticed a big dent where he was creased aswell
pissed me off
