TUT TUT TUT !!!

I find the halfords stuff to be the same price as castrol from ECP!

I've read this and the linked thread.
I've got 2x sealed, unused 1L bottles of "Castrol Magnatec Professional" SAE 5W-30.
The bottle says "FILLED ON 07/07/08".
Via the Castrol website, inputting the registration number for the GTi results in a recommendation to use Castrol EDGE 5W-30 although the website does also say:
"Castrol Magnatec is part of our wide range of premium oil products... PLEASE NOTE: the oil selector may show that Castrol EDGE is the recommended oil for your vehicle. In many cases you’ll see that Castrol Magnatec is ALSO suitable for your car and driving style. In this scenario EITHER PRODUCT will provide the protection and performance you need."
So, 2 questions please:
1. Does the 'date filled' stamp on the bottle mean that there is a shelf life for this oil?
2. Can this 5w-30 Castrol Magnatec oil that I have, safely and properly be used as top up oil on the MK6 GTi?
Thanks.

Ive used hellfrauds oil before in many cars especially as nowere else is open sundays. Just not in my mk6. As long as its been tested to the correct manufactures standard and so will be listed on the bottle as such.
Ive used alsorts of make oil in the leon over the years I just made sure it was the correct vw ###.## standard.
At the end of the day its your car and you can do with it what you want.

1 Date is an indicator in case there has been an upgrade of the product.
2 Should indicate on the oil if it is compliant with VW codes for the latest engines - codes in your hand book VW 502 for annual oil change and 504/507 for long life. If not would not use it myself.

I'd buy castrol if they didn't take the piss with prices and selling 4 litre contains so you have to buy an extra 1 litre tin to get it to the max
