Well I can't believe it, has it really been a year since I took delivery of the GTD (actually a year next week) ? Wow doesn't time fly when you are having fun. So today it time to take the first of my 3 free services that I negotiated with the car, at only 8,800 miles.
When I booked it in with the dealer they checked on their system and told me there's a software update they have to perform as well. Now my car has never suffered any issues at all (electronic handbrake has always worked perfectly), no issues with the discover Nav, fuel consumption appears normal. Any ideas what the update might try to fix (especially as I don't think anything is broken) ?
Also, I guess the first service is nothing more than a glorified oil change and a quick peek around ?

The software update has apparantly made others GTD's 10% thirstier on fuel and run with cooler oil temperature. So I'm not sure what the update does exactly but it must be to do with the running of the engine. I believe Monkeyhanger has had it done on his car.
Did your service light and count down come on then? Mine still hasn't come on the GTI after 9500 miles of hard driving which I'm finding strange. Not even had my countdown yet...
Yes the first service is just a minor one. Basically an oil and filter change. Major one is next year.

Cheers bud. Hope the fuel penalty isn't true !
With regards my "countdown" no, the car had come from the factory set to flexible interval servicing, but I'd asked at PDI to have it changed to time and distance (10k miles), which of course they didn't. I had negotiated in the purchase price of the car the free 3 year servicing package so wanted to get an annual service.
So basically I just waited for the car to be 12 months old (which it is next week) and booked it in explaining that it was 12 months old and it was no problem at all. They were happy to carry out the work under the 3 year servicing package at no cost to me and the servicing dealer (not the same as the supplying dealer), say they have now changed the car to time and distance (just had a call and a really cool "health check" video of my car in the dealers emailed to me).

My car had it's first service about 6 weeks ago (scary how fast the time has past) and there was a software update applied to the handbrake. I found it slightly strange as i had never had an issue with my handbrake either

Just dropped mine in for its service today as well. It's done approx 19,500 miles and is about 10 months old. Was 900 miles over the oil change alert and 500 miles away from the inspection alert. They will be doing both checks.
Hope the software update and thirstier car thing isn't true. Updates should be making things better not worse!

Is this 'update' for the GTi and GTD?
-
Yes my car does seem to be cooler running (oil temp has never been above 96C since the service, it had peaked at 106C during some hard motorway driving). It likes to sit at 91C under low load now, whereas before it was 95C. I'm now getting slightly better mpg than I was getting in the winter, not great. Lower temps for lower NOx emissions? How can it be better for the environment to be pumping out 10% more CO2 (using 10% more fuel), than a bit more NOx? Let me know if your economy changes Sootchucker.

Will do, I'll keep a close eye on it.

I picked her backup. No software updates made. Maybe only for earlier cars?
A clean bill of health apart from 2mm of tread left on the fronts!

2mm of tread left after 19500 miles? Lucky you in down to 2mm after 9500 miles. Haha!
I'm guessing yours is the GTD? Has anyone had a GTI in for service yet? I'm hoping there's no ECU software update for that yet.

I still have your chassis details on file I can check for you tomorrow dude.

Well, she got a very clean bill of health. Tyres (after nearly 9k miles) were reported as 6mm both fronts, and 7mm both backs - not too bad.
Did the usual drive home, where depending on traffic I can usually get between 52-60mpg indicated, and it got just under 56mpg, although it was quite congested. Not sure what to take from that over one journey MPG wise - probably nothing, will see more over the coming weeks.
Software "recall" (as they called it), performed, apparently as mentioned to do with the EPB.
-
I've already had the software recall on mine and haven't noticed any changes to mpg's.

Cheers Chris, that would be greatly appreciated! :)
