I was planning getting a k280 but may look at getting a k04-001 (maybe used but recon'd)
Which?
Why?
-
k04-001 will max out at 260-270 probably get a little more from the K280
Plenty of low down torque with the K04-001 but puts it within bending rods territory.
I would go for a K300 as future proofing if want more power later on
-
I pretty much ruled k300 out because it means going rods and diff etc etc
I know it can be mapped more gentle but pointless extra money
Its more acceleration im after rather than top end speed
-
300ft-lb possible with the K04-001
Had one on briefly and it was quick on the road after some R-Tech magic. Not a world of difference from a K03s though
-
I highly rate the k300, as a street car it is quite capable even though all out power wasn't the goal my golf has over 300bhp per ton, the power holds pretty well for a small frame turbo, mine holds over 300bhp even at 7000rpm. But as you say it's a good idea to do the rods and then you want to make the most of all that power with a good setup and LSD at a minimum. Though it sounds a lot, it makes for an effective setup.
-
Talking an extra £1.5k or so for rods and lsd though, right?
-
LSD is about £700-800, conrods are about $400usd, if you aren't able to rebuild the engine and gearbox yourself then fitting cost will be more or less what you expect to pay for a engine and gearbox rebuild.

K04-001 is a k03s with slightly bigger turbine. Give a tad more torque and about 10bhp extra on the top end.
K280 is k04 internals in a k03 and will flow more.
