Got a self-adjusting clutch cable from vw heritage for my 8v GTI, they didn't seem to do them any more at GSF. It seems just that little bit too short, yet when I refitted my old one it went on without a hitch. Has anyone else used one of these cables? It would seem that the cable is duff, but just wondered if there was a difference between the cables, like the old one being a bit slacker, that meant it would be harder to get on.
Not fitted a clutch cable before, do the new ones have similar amount of slack to an old one. Had the white sleeve thing to compress the spring on when trying both cables, and fitted the pedal end first, so think I'm doing everything right.
edit: this is the one I got

That's the guide I followed, was fine for fitting old cable but not the new one.
-
Virtually the same in reverse for installtion. Leave the adjuster in the locked position and connect the gearbox side along with the rubber bush and clip. Then feed the cable to the pedal and hook it on (you will need to lift the pedal towards you away from the floor. Once all connected - remove the plastic collar to unlock the adjuster. Pump the pedal a few times and you should be done.
-
That's what I tried, it's just that the cable I got from vw heritage seems to be about an inch too short. But when I try the same thing with the original cable it fits fine. So either I'm doing something wrong, which seems more unlikely now from the guides I've seen and the fact the original cable fits OK, or the cable I've been supplied doesn't fit for some reason.
-
Are both the cables the same length?
-
They looked to be when I lined them up. This was with the springs uncompressed as I only have one collar to use.
-
Is the adjuster still compressed on the new cable?
-
Yes, am using the same collar when trying both cables (it came with the new cable)
-
That is odd - assuming you have routed the cable exactly the same way then the new cable should fit.
-
Yeah, don't really see where you can go wrong with the routing anyway. Am gonna try and send it back and get a manual adjust one, all the comments I've seen say they're more reliable.
-
Most owners do revert to the less troublesome manual cable. The kit on the gearbox side is slighty different for a manual cable.
-
So managed to fit a manual cable. Haven't had time to test it properly yet but from first impressions the bite point is at a reasonable level. Pedal is noticeably heavier though, wondered if it was down to the difference between manual and adjusting cables, or just because it's a new cable?
