Title: 8v losing power then picks up?
Post by: TEST100 on 07 September 2014, 12:09
My golfs been playing up for a while.gona change fuel filter this wk.hopefully thats the source of the problem.whats ur views?

Car has 3" cold air intake from airbox to front lower grill
sparks were changed to iridiums not so long ago
pipercross panel filter
decat sports exhaust

not sure wether any of these were affecting

Im thinking it could be mayb b a timing issue? Or fuel filter? Or injectors?

Well for a start a decat will do nothing in the way of increased performance

Ok but that doesnt help me pin point the problem?
are u not fond of decats

whats your engine code?

do you still have lambda sensor (in cat on some engines)? are the intake connections after air flow/mass meter tight?

any faults on vcds? have you checked all senders are working correctly and give sensible readings with measuring blocks?

Engine code is AGG 1996/97 8v

Have you cleaned out the throttle body?

The last time i cleaned it was about a yr ago.so maybe.

im also thinking it could be the shape in which the 3" diy cold air feed runs like a step shape to the offside front grill.

Could be MAF..... ?? Try unplugging it and see if it runs better without.

Is the pipercross filter the oiled cotton type?

I had this with my 2E 8v after doing the cambelt, manual adjustment on the dizzy and resetting the ecu by unplugging and re plugging seemed to do the job!

I also did everything mentioned above but they made no real difference.

Ive unplugged the maf sensor while running.it did make the engine sound like it was running faster.
read engine error codes.found 3 codes -
02 sensor
Lambda senso
abs speed sensor

i erased all codes went for a drive and read again
abs speed  sensor came back up so ive changed that today.ball ache

It now seems better after deleting codes?
Is this possible

lambda sensor could be dying... did you check in measuring blocks that lambda values still change at a decent speed?

problem still persists.

ive now flushed the rad, changed expansion tank, added new coolant, and some red x to the fuel tank.
this has seemed to help a bit but its still suffering

lambda sensor.
surely that would come up on a error code check then, which ive allready done

have you checked to see if the code has come back?

I had the same problem, disconnecting the maf sensor helped. I changed the maf sensor cleared the codes problem solved. Your MAF sensor needs replacing. Also check the braided hose that comes out of the side of the throttle body. If that has leaks then it also causes problems.

Yh all previous codes have come back up including abs sensor which ive allready changed?when i disconect battery to reset ecu do i have to disconect both + & - so it works?

im planning on changing lambda sensor but not sure wot size i need.?

Physically unplug the ECU in the scuttle tray - at least that's what I did anyway. 3 months of problems were fixed after timing the dizzy and resetting the ECU

Lambda sensor is changed and problem solved.might hav a look at timing and resetting ecu to see wether it helps anything else.but car is running fine now.

nxt thing is the lower crank wotever it is.it makes a rubbing noise?

Tensioner.  Get some 3 in 1 oil white grease or bearing oil. Spray it in the bearing and see if it goes away.

resetting ecu to see wether it helps anything else.

It's an urban myth that you can 'reset' ECU by disconnecting battery. Delete fault codes (you obviously have means) and that should be it ;)

Ive sprayed sone dw40 near bearing before and that gets  rid of noise for bout a day.mayb with proper bearing oil it will last.cheers

Wd40 is a cleaner! Never spray it in bearings!
