Title: wheelarch clearance probs advise needed.....
Post by: mk1 formel e on 11 September 2005, 12:17
i've just dropped my mk1 nice n low on coilovers with 7 by 15's but now i've got a smallish amount of rubbing front and back. it looks like the rears are rubbing on the arch lip about level with top of bumper and fronts are rubbing at the top of the arches during cornering. how can i fix it? can i just grind back the lips or is it better to get a bodyshop to somehow bend the offending bits out of the way? i can't really alter the bump stops anymore as i need the amount of travel it has now. does anybody know of anyone near the berks area who could do the work?

you've heard of people rolling their arches yeah? this is when people rollback the metal lip to giva a bit more clearance, its easy to do but best left to a bodyshop. you can just cut the lip off to a certain extent but make sure everything is well sealed against rust etc.

don't bother cutting the arches yourself unless you are a confident seam welder. The skins are prone to splitting when cut and require a good weld to seal them back up. Otherwise you will rot the inner arch plate aswell as the outer ones.

Just do a google search for bodyshops and give them a ring in and around the berks area.

thanks for the advise, i'm confident with  a grinder but not a very good welder  :embarassed: i guess that for once i'll have to pay somebody to do it for me before the tyres lose their sidewalls
