Hello,
Long time lurker, had little to say until now...
I have a Discovery NavPro unit in my Mk7 and was interested in the Gracenote database the unit has with it.
For those that don't know, Gracenote has album art built into it which means that you don't need to do that yourself... fantastic eh? Obviously the database is a fixed point in time though and an update should be needed to keep it up to speed.
Gracenote's website say that end users can't get updates from them, so I contacted VW to ask how it was possible... expecting them to say that an update to the software or nav would provide it... however...
Thank you for your recent request for information on your Discovery Pro system. Please accept my apologies for the delay in my
response.
I have spoken with our Technical Support Team who has advised that it is not possible to update the Gracenote function or
database on this system. I apologise for any disappointment that this may cause.
Another awesome feature cripple from VW...

so can anyone with Nav Pro/Gracenote confirm this is the case?
-
Well as per the email it's not possible to update gracenote so what other confirmation is required??
-
I can confirm that it is not possible to update my Gracenote database on my Discovery Pro...
And VW seem to agree with me.
As does a google search, which is how come I asked them in the first place.
Cheers

I am now wondering though if an update to the pro software will update the gracenote database too. Newer firmware may mean newer database and we all know VW customer services know diddly squat about anything.
-
You could be right... Not that there is anyway of telling easily. I can't remember if the box displays the db version. Will have to look later.
But yes, I can't think of a question their customer services do know the answer to.

Ok, so I have software version 0290 and it says the grace note is revision 5203 (build 1). Anyone got a newer version of either?

Do folk still play CD's?!?

Not usually, but I also play MP3's and it works with those too...
It doesn't seem to work with the Ipod (so you still need ITunes to insert the artwork).

It's not just for cd's it also works on SD cards and usb, apparently.
-
Ah right I never knew it would work with the USB.
I've got a few older albums on it exactly as it was on the CD and I don't think they produce album art!
Was the whole idea of Gracenote that you could put a CD in that didn't have CD Text and the the tracks would be labelled correctly but the length of the songs had to marry exactly with the Gracenote version?

It does all sorts of things, from track listings to album art

Its pretty good (if not up to date!) and has obscure stuff. not just mainstream.

Yep and if it can't match your MP3/FLAC/etc file for the album art but it can find the genre it shows a generic icon for that instead.
I like it but I would like to be able to update and customise things a bit...pipe dreaming I reckon
