the car is 2002 mk4 golf 1.6 16valve
while driving on the motorway the following warning lights came on:
red alternator/battery light came followed by message alternator fault-workshop
then yellow flashing abs light-
then red brake !symbol !
then airbag light-airbag fault .
the car did not switch off,and the AA man came and said alternator was faulty and told me to drive home slowly and he followed me in case car conked out but thankfully it didnt.
now when i start the car airbag light stays on and computer message says airbag fault.
no other warning lights now but i noticed that battery/alternator red warning light does not come on when ignition is switched on which it should and go off off once car is started up.
the following are fault codes are from vag.com
16947
00668
01330
01331
01332
01333
01334
00532
Car starts up fine,it had a new battery last yr.
what is causing these faults-faulty alternator or is it faulty wiring?
cannot see multiple fuses blowing together and
drive belt for alternator is intact.

I had similar problems whereas in my case the live from alternator actually melted the fuse and therefore the car cutout and died completely, Had to buy another fuse box for the car would even start again and I was told the cause is likely to be the Earth cable from the alternator to be corroded and breaking down

hi and thanks
i could only see a 2 pins within a plastic connector which clips onto the alternator,it has 2 thin wires going to it.
and the postive lead which is covered by a plastic cap on the alternator in my golf 1.6.
is there a separate earth lead ad where is it located?

The airbag fault won't go away unless you have it reset via VAG COM
-
airbag fault code was 00532-supply voltage B+
sporadic -signal too low
sporadic -signal too high.
i cleared these codes and the airbag warning message and airbag light goes off once the car is started.

turns out it was faulty alternator and i sourced an economy bosch alternator fromn TPS and everyting is back to normal now
