Title: coilover/suspension kit question
Post by: davemk4 on 15 August 2014, 08:39
After having my arse fed to me on a plate last night by a hyundai coupe bag of crap on a round about i wanna sort this handling out. Dont worry i killed him after the roundabout  boost!

Current mods ARB , vrs beam bushes, rear boot beam, tt front bushes, poly dog bone mount, s3 lower brace, strut brace. Current suspension srt koni 40% uprated shockers and h&r 35mm cup springs. Only a year old.

Now im not wanting 80mm lowering etc. Im keeping this as a daily comfy driver etc but happy to have it harder!. Now i want to lower to 40/45mm as the kit i got wasnt for gtis so really im only lowered 25mm or so

Now got upto 600 to spend. Seen spax adjustable kits which are shockers and springs but with 28 dampening settings had a simlar kit on last car and really could tell when knob was adjusted. About 410 delivered and lowers 50mm front 45mm rear.

Or for another 100 or ao can get spax coilovers 35mm rear and 20-80mm front and adjustable dampening.

Anyone got experience with these? Or any other recomendations to sort the bus handling out?

Audi TT hubs, rack, arms with superpro poly bushes all round will change the whole feel of the car mate, best mod I've done on mine by far

I have a set of Gaz coil overs on my Mk3 and loving them.
Big step up from worn Koni TA & Eibach pro type lowered springs

Like the Spax they are british.
Mine were used & had unknown history, so sent them back to Gaz for servicing, it was very cheap -only £30 a corner.

What size wheels are you running? finding my montreal 2's with the standard balloon sized rubber to be pretty poor

Spax are a very well respected brand (the psx my best selling suspension kit) and the feedback I've had has being great, I would recommend them if you want to keep comfort and then when you want true handling you can adjust them in a few minutes and stiffen it up (for a bit of fun)

b.t.w My price for a PSX on the Mk4 is £415 delivered and the coilover kit VSX is £670 delivered

What mm drop you list for the psx?

What mm drop you list for the psx?

I list a 35mm drop and a 50/40mm drop kit for the 1.8 upwards (inc the turbo)

i've got GAZ coilovers up front with adjustable dampeners and koni rear coilovers

quite harsh on the road so looking to go back to spring and shock and they do decent drops as well

I got my golf handling nicely now, I got a decent set of coilover (bilstein b16 pss9) but I've had to change a lot of parts. I highly recommend a limited slip differential if you can budget for it.

Well read up on rax spax coilovers. Sound crap. Even on super soft setting they reportdly are very harsh bouncy ride. Seems quality iffy too.

So now what? I wanna get these ordered as my 1 year old koni has blown under warranty so want coils ready to swap on.

Now shocking as tgis is. BC coilovers dont list the mm drop! Dont know if any one knowa if adjustable front and rear? Anyone know h&r coilovers any good? Got 800 to spend. And want adjustment front and back both in dampening and mm drop

They are cheap lows and that is the only reason anyone likes them if you stuck a decent set on you would see the difference night and day!! joms are great for people who want cheap lows and don't mind having a harsh ride!

Exactly. But getting annoying now. Too much choice. Got apex coil over 450, avo at 660. H&r 725.00 and the kw etc around 750. Come on which one best lol. Npt doing track just want a firmer more sportier ride 40-45mm drop.

Will my arb rub on oem 16" wheels when dropped 40-45?

Ive ran spax adjustables on my previous mk2 and 3 brilliant wouldnt hesitate use them again. The softest ride is harsh but i like it like that, feel more like track suspension than for road. i have H&R coilovers now on they mk4 nowhere near as harsh but cost a lot more than my spax did.

I've got AP coilovers on as came with the car when bought it.

It is probably down by 60/70mm at the moment and only just slightly harsher than when had a 40mm Weitec shocks & springs kit on my old MK4.

A lot less body roll even without a rear arb compared to previous car although can be a bit bouncy when going fast on rough roads.

They are mid budget think £400 new and I bet with a sensible drop would be more than usable day to day.

Front ARB will be fine with a 40-45mm drop

I have the same requirements for my own mk4 albeit an estate.  Do the rears vary on mk4's like the mk3's do or can I use normal hatchback suspension kits?
Am I right in thinking a spring and strut set up will just have higher spring rates to compensate for the rear load...and coilovers would just be a case of adjusting accordingly?
