Title: popping/running on

My 1990 8v gti pb has developed a problem, when driving along its fine plenty of power not jerky, but yesterday I noticed when taking my foot off the gas pedal such as rolling down hills with the car in gear I can hear the engine popping through the exhaust and it feels like its running on a bit. I can't find any vac leaks but with the bonnet up, after switching the engine off I can hear hissing for a second or so...i dont know if these are related :/
Any help would be brilliant.

Mine pops if I drive it hard then let off. But I quite like it...

I dont know about the hissing though. Do you mean you can hear the hissing in the cabin?

Mines doing it constantly even when just driving in traffic. No I can hear the hissing when standing in front of the car with the bonnet up.

:P fixed it found a tiny vac leak, kinda miss the popping now :D
