Title: Advice re: Winter wheels to replace 18" Austins on a GTI
Post by: DeanLearner on 10 August 2014, 20:57
Hi guys,

This is my first post here, though I've been reading up on old threads for a little while.

I've currently got a GTI on order, with the build week due this week, so I'm anticipating delivery early September. It'll be a daily driver and I'll be using it for early morning commutes, so I'm keen to make it as winter-proof as possible.

I'm currently looking at buying a second set of alloys with winter tires to replace the standard 18" Austin alloys over Winter. Does anyone else have experience of doing this?

My preference is to get a set of 17" alloys to allow for tyres with deeper sidewalls, and a slightly narrower wheel diameter (7" instead of 7.5"), which would mean replacing the 225/40-18 tyres with 225/45-17 tyres.

My main questions are:

How easy is it to recallibrate the TPMS with the new wheels?
Would replacing the wheels myself affect my warranty or should I ask the dealership (with whom I have 3yrs service) about doing this?
Has anyone come across any problems with exchanging for winter tyres?

Thanks!

Ben
