Hi all,
Been a while since I posted, but ended up purchasing a new GTD today.
Went in to get a price for one and there was one in the showroom, so did a deal on that.
Part ex'd my mark 5 which has served me well for 9 years, so sad to see it go.
Spec is 5 door Carbon Grey, DSG, Pan sunroof, Discover Pro, Leather, sport and sound pack, winter pack, keyless and 5 year warranty.
We'll spec'd, would have liked the phone prep and rear camera, but no matter.
Pick up start of September.
Happy enough with the deal for a car in stock.
Never had a DSG so looking forward to it.

Wow got to be £35k with all those extras hope you got a good deal :)

Nice spec!
Phone prep isn't worth the money in my own experience. I very rarely use the holder in the centre armrest, I just put my phone in the cup holder. Never once had a call drop on me or poor reception.
-
That's good to know about the phone prep.
Apparently it was a car for one of the sales people for September, so not much choice on the spec but not complaining.
Looking at used cars of up to 6 months and the price they are asking, I don't think I done too bad out of it.
Looking forward to picking it up now.
One for you wheel gurus, will 16 inch alloys fit over the calipers?
Thanks.

Yes

Yes
Thank you, that's great to know.

Was having a look through the brochure this evening, as not seen it before.
A question for those in the know. The brochure says grey calipers, however on the car that I am picking up has red ones.
Is this an anomaly, or has something changed in the spec?
Thanks
-
Red callipers come as part of the sport and sound pack.
So what discount percentage did you achieve on a stock car?

Ah, thanks. Couldn't find this in the brochure.
Was in around 10% before VAT, but got above average for a trade in.

I don't think it mentions it anywhere.
Even the online configurator just mentions an onboard "sound generator" when in fact it has a straight through exhaust with some sort of sound chamber attached to it.

When I took mine in to the dealer for some warranty work the manager couldn't believe the growl off it. He thought I had an after market exhaust installed.
-
10% is pretty good for an immediate delivery. Bet you are excited
-
I didn't think it was too bad.
Did spec one up for delivery but about 16 weeks for delivery, so cheekily asked about the one in the showroom.
If you don't ask and all that. Can only think targets had not been met for the month.
Yeah, we'll excited. Just sorting out the money to pay for it now.

I've got to agree, it is the one option I specified that I wouldn't bother if were to go out and buy another...

VW UK's description of this option has been wrong since it was introduced....

In my opinion phone prep is a waste of time. I have a samsung S4 which is 13cms tall. According the brochure the plate inside the arm rest only transmits the signal of a phone 12cms tall. I have only once or twice seen an increase in the strenght of my signal. I no longer bother trying and have a holder which clips on to the vent.
I only ordered phone prep as VW wouldn't let me have the heated windscreen without it. Odd

exactly the same here although I just got rid of the S4 for a HTC One M8

I ordered a GTI yesterday. I have a couple of points to add to this thread.
Don't deal with a dealership that doesn't give you at least 10% discount from list, and it really should be 12%. Don't feel obliged to go with a local dealer.
I'm waiting for confirmation but I should have BW41, and delivery end Oct/early Nov.
Someone earlier in the thread was talking about waiting 6 months. This is definitely not necessary. Move on to the next dealership and make sure it's a different franchise. There's always a car out there. You just need to find a salesperson willing to put some work in.
For the guys about to order; in my opinion, the GTI needs keyless, rear view camera, and park assist. If it's in your budget, every serious reviewer raves about the value of PP. Chassis Control really helps the ride, especially on the 19'' Sandiagos.
Thanks for reading my first post.

I'd put more credence in the cost to change than discount alone, if you have a px. You won't get 10% and top book for your old one. I'd consider all 3 of the named options as completely unnecessary, I'd consider 2 of them to be novelties. They ate cheap as options go, park assist especially is something I would do a few times for the fun factor only. I can parallel park easily enough and will not kerb the wheels doing it myself (as the park assist can). I'd probably get PP if I was getting a GTI, it's one of the few options that isn't money lost at part ex.

I guess there are different ways to approach buying and owning a car. The purchase price is clearly important but really I'm just interested in enjoying my car for a few years and I selected my spec accordingly. Life is too short to be worried now about saving a few hundred pounds in 3 years time.
-
I am new to this, both to forum's about cars that I own, and to buying a car that is actually popular enough to make videos of or indeed be reviewed by TV Pundits! However I have like the people in this section purchased a new Golf GTD MK7 (having owned 2 Polo's to date, current car Polo SEL TDI with options) with optional extras including:
DCC
Satellite Navigation
Panoramic Sunroof
Rear view Camera
Night Blue Metallic Paint
etc..
I sadly will be waiting for my car too long and end up wondering why, given that Golfs even like ours are not that unique and the production processes are around 40 hours / 3 days ish long (yes I know 1000's order Golfs but still!). I would also be interested to know from yourselves what made you buy a £30K Golf instead of say a £30k BMW?
I myself choose new over used any day of the week especially spending £30k or above, but stayed with VW mainly because I saw nothing vastly superior elsewhere and thought that the Golf GTD was still practical & economical enough, whilst having something like genuine ability in the ride / handling / power departments.
Has anyone looked at the new Golf GTE as a serious car?

I went through so many thought processes and options before settling on the GTD. I test drove:
Lexus IS 300H (company option before I came out of the scheme)
BMW 520D
BMW 320D
BMW 125D
Audi A3 Saloon 150 tdi
Audi A6 2.0 tdi
Golf GTI PP
I think I initially fell into the trap of 'look at how much (big) car I can get for circa £30k'. An example being the Audi A6 with leather etc for 'Golf prices' with a drive the deal price.
I then realised I didn't want or need a car that large and narrowed it down to smaller stuff. I just don't like the looks of the A3 sportback and the interior, despite what all the magazines say, just didn't do it for me. Even in S-Line trim it just left me a little cold. The standard ride didn't seem as good as the GTD and it was missing quite a few of the Golfs standard spec items too.
I had an e90 3-series before the Golf and fancied something different, again by the time you spec an M-Sport (the only one that looks decent in my opinion) and get the spec to the same level as the golf you're racking up the cost too.
For some strange man maths reason I saw the 125d as the car that had to compare to the Golf, rather than the 120d I didn't like the looks as much and the spec was poorer so it had to blow me away in ride/handling/performance terms, it simply didn't. The ride was worse, I didn't like the interior and although space wasn't an absolute priority it did feel more cramped. I'm sure the performance was much better, but it didn't FEEL in a different league.
That got me to the Golf GTD and GTI. I didn't even think of comparing the non PP GTI version to the GTD as one of the main reasons I would have chosen the GTI would have been for the diff. The GTI was lovely and if I didn't have a play thing (TVR Chimaera) I would have gone for it. Doing the maths though it would have cost me £100 a month extra over the GTD.
So the GTD had a lovely standard spec that would have cost quite a bit extra to include in the Audis and BMWs, it's the right size for most things I need to do (occasional adult passengers, touring holidays in the but small enough for the narrow roads I end up on a lot of the time and cramped car parks), looks lovely, handles nicely, rides comfortably (even without DCC in my opinion), has a little bit more go than the 320d brigade (which is enough for most occasions), nice standard tech and decent economy.
Personally I think you'd have to spend quite a bit more money to get something that felt substantially 'better' than the GTD, or indeed the GTI. It's such a cliche, but it's hard to think of a better all round car.
Whoops, that turned out to be an epic email

I like Jammy 1's comments. I have admired the current BMW 5 series styling a lot and considered a used 530d for the same price but then its used not new! also I notice BMW a lot more these days given their diversification which is a shame.
I remember when they changed from the very boxy styling to the then very stylish 7 series which looked a cut above. I also admired the M5 then as it was very Q car rather than "look at me" obvious.
I will say I am not that impressed with the VW colour selection options, website configurator, or the fact that options like satnav are not standard.
This will be my first 100 bhp + car, and I've chosen to de-badge the car! Id appreciate some opinion on the choices re de-badging or not.
Cheers.

I like others looked at other bigger used cars, eg A4 & A6 but discounted as I thought they were just too big.
I did think about a Octavia VRS, but didn't think the quality of the finish was as good as the golf.
I considered a GT Golf but when spec'd up, a GTD as about the same price.
It just about ticks all the boxes, although I am yet to drive one.
