Hi all, need some advise
As stated above, will keep this short (I hope).
Basically my mk2 KR 16v went wrong on me which I fixed myself, I'm fairly competent. I had some leaks and starting problems so I pulled the engine (was rebuilt 5/6 years ago, had a gearbox rebuild a year ago) replaced the ignition system and started to fix the leaks i.e rear main, sump, rocker cover, inlet, I then did the clutch and cambelt, cleaned, painted a polished lots of bits to make it presentable and dropped it back it, fired it up and the head gasket went on piston 1, so I changed that and it went again. I had the head skimmed and all seems to be ok now although the machine shop said the head won't be skimmed again.
So my car runs fine now but have thoughts in my mind if it goes again its junk. I have a lot invested in this car, its my first car which I've had for 7 years and its my baby.
It has a few good bits on which I would need to part with in the event of an engine conversion like 4 branch, magnecor leads, new dizzy and rebuilt gearbox ect.
I'd like to build an engine while my car runs in the event of it going wrong again to get the car back on the road in a short time frame, I'd really like to hear what you guys would do in my situation.
As I've had this car ages I really do know my way around the simplicity of the KR on k-jet. Newer engines with management and crank, cam and lambda sensors I find a little daunting.
I have looked at so many build threads but feeling a little lost on which way to go
Conversion wo's - I want to keep my 16v clocks thats all that matters to me but if its easier to lose them then I would, but only if I made about 200bhp, I don't want a monster but want reliable useable conversion that gives the old girl some pep.
The choice is ABF but do I keep k-jet (looks messy) or use the ABF as is, this is when I'm out of my depth regarding management, which loom would I use? I know the mk2 had 2 different looms, 1 had hazard switch on column and the other on the dash. Mine is on the dash so I know its the older style loom but is this still useable? This is my biggest problem.
Does the KR dizzy and leads work on an ABF?
Its the same on the 20vt also
Say I bought a mk3 16v ABF, do I need to mod much loom wise?
Say I bought a 20vt AUM (I'd want a BAM tho) what would you all recommend?
Or just rebuild another KR?
Don't really want Vr6 as nice as it sounds I think its a tad front end heavy for my liking unless turbo but thats mega ££££
I think you can see what I'm asking, cost is a factor of course but not the biggest issue but I'm massively undecided as on which way to go. What would YOU do!!! Selling is not an option either :wink:

buy a cheap golf 1.8t with the agu engine in it a full car can be bought for 3-400 quid now :wink: you will make most of this back selling the bits you dont use and with a decent turbo you will see more than 200bhp :smiley:

I was thinking the same thing but I've not seen any that cheap, will keep my eyes open.
I don't mind doing gaskets, seals, timing belt and clutch but don't want to start doing big ends and rings ect. I would freshen it up tho.
Ok so let's say I got a whole 180bhp AUM 20vt mk4 golf, would you use the whole loom, fuse box, clocks and keys as kind of plug and play? I can join wires that's not hard at all but splitting a loom and cutting bits is not my cup of tea. Is it straight forward I got the mk4 and everything will fit into the mk2?
I have seen a thread on here on a 20vt guide but that uses qpeng loom? Is that just a modded loom?

Would you use MFI or EFI?
I would fit the complete set up with electronics etc, k jet is dark ages now.

if you want some thing with a bit of kick but still reliable and wont give you issues, id go with a ABF, just get a 16v golf and swap the lot over, nice and easy
a 20VT is a lot easier than you would think, looks daunting at first but anything looks difficult the first time. youd be able to get really nice MPG from a 150bhp or 180bhp 20vt if u set it up right, and u can use your original clocks with an AGU engine, speed sensor comes off the gearbox, nice and easy
