I blame Facef**k for the demise of the common forum. It's not just here, I've noticed all of the ones i use dwindling over the past few years.

And the family feel...

Havent been in VAG scene for a great deal of years, probably about 7years and a couple less on this forum maybe.

Dont think r-tech have quietened down though.  Might not post as much now though, but still hte most popular vag tuner.

Still better than most for technical help, the aldi forums are all about shiny wheels and taking your car to a garage when you have a problem,  as if.....

My second stint on here as I let the first one slide in favour of ED38 and Club GTI :lipsrsealed:

Always enjoyed the forum and have recently come back to reading it on a daily basis in my lunch break, I have noticed that the mk5 and over sections seem to be a little quiet compared to the threads on the mk3 section but I guess there is less you can do to them??

I guess it's just the age of the advantage forum member that affects this.  Generally the younger lads tend to use Facebook to fulfil their addiction, bust most of us "more mature" folk use the forum.  Some of the other forums I'm a member of are still going strong for this very reason  although it always goes quiet around winter when lots are tucked away in hibernation. It's a circle, it'll come back at some point.

Forums seem to be a bit of a dying breed, it's all stupid FB nowadays. I used to be on here all the time (joined back in 2006) but now it's just too quiet

Of course I'm completely anti-social and have never met anyone off this forum, although once I parked up next to someone off here in Morrisons car park. That was the closest to Golf based socialisation I ever got

I do however still have the same Mk2 so, not all bad!

I dont agree. Myself and most of my mates all had vw's 5 years ago. Now we drive bmw m3's, focus RS's and the likes of. Now all the young lads in my town drive honda's and skid cars.

I honestly think people are moving on from golfs. They sell their cars to normal commuters that dont come on forums.

As I've said the m3 forum is very busy and always something new happening. Maybe its the age and the majority being older and not going on FB or whatever.

Perhaps it's just my experience, I've definitely noticed a general decline in all the forums I go on, not just Golf or car related ones, and other people make the same observation...

Fiestaturbo was my absolute favourite, it's where I met my partner and still see friends from there today. That declined when they decided to make a hidden area for long time members, bad mistake that killed the board.

I've been around for a while but only just drop in to update my Midas rebuild thread as there's not that much activity anymore. Amusingly I only had a GTi for 18 months whilst registered on here before replacing it with my Bora. Still got it...

And VR6Wherry, you're welcome - I loved that thread as well

I have recently binned FB as I get really irritated by game requests, repeated pictures of the same car etc. etc.

At least with forums you get a choice of what you want to see.

I remember most of those too.

Date Registered: 17 October 2003, 12:30

Registered when I had my trusty Mk2 1.8 GL and I was looking for a GTI.

It was the days before Facebook and "social media". Young Golf enthusiasts communicating via the forum because that's all there was. Now those of us who were young then, are older and (some) have moved onto other cars. The young Golf owners now are sharing stuff with their friends and car related groups via Facebook instead so there's less action on here.

Might it also have something to do with the fact that the newer models (Mk4/5/6/7) aren't as easy to work on, so people aren't looking for a "how to fix your gear linkage" thread and there are fewer Mk1/2/3 around, which were easier to work on yourself?

I still come to this forum several times a week, checking out projects and dub rides, but there's generally not enough activity for me to bother everyday.

I'm an odd one out, joined 2006-05-21 and still driving a Golf GTI (and that's even rarer for a moderator!).
I do remember the forum going off line and the withdrawal symptoms people had (and posting on the GolfGTi facebook group for a day or two)

This is still the most friendly forum I visit and beats all the facebook groups for help (and the opinions right or wrong!)

I disagree with that a little bit although it's still a valid comment. I find my mk5 GTI much easier to work on as there's no having to deal with rusty/seized bolts (I'm pathetically weak). Also, the parts available for modern cars is staggering, spoilt for choice. It's a different kind of modifying now and a lot of the cars aren't old enough to experience the big problems that 20+ year old cars have yet. Plus most things involve a laptop now a days...

24 January 2009, 18:11 - Joined here after I got my first mk2 Golf GTI 8v. I miss that thing a lot.
