Title: NOOB on MAC G5 suggestions
Post by: clipperjay on 07 August 2014, 19:59
Hi peeps I need some advice I got a G5 running on Leopard version  10.5.8 2GB+1GB of PC3200 which I assume is DDR1 PC2700 I think. 1.6ghz 2003 model.
Its not that I have become a convert :lipsrsealed: I just wanted the case to butcher up LOL.
But the wife likes the G5.
So questions:
What anti virus software can I run guessing Malwarebytes won't work?
I've just downloaded firefox for Leopard and that's it so far?
What cool apps can you suggest or any advice with what can be done to it?
Cheers
Clip.
Okay firefox 16 unsafe version is the only support?
Can I upgrade to snow leopard on a 1.6ghz with 3gig of ram?
Lol took panel off and left it off, comp went balistic on me!

An 11 year old mac...

You wont be able to do a whole lot with it. Apple are normally pretty quick to stop supporting old products so you go out and buy shiny new ones. Unlikely you will be able to upgrade, and most "cool apps" wont be supported on your machine, sorry :/

If it is MacOS she likes (presumably it isn't the actual hardware?!) Then you can get pretty cheap 2010/11 ish macs (check out a 4 year old mac mini, although a new model came out 2011, so see if you can get one of those on the cheap) They were "only" £500 new, and mine still runs like new.

Or just build her a hackintosh, it is pretty easy if you are happy to break a few of Apples rules and the odd law.

Yeah leopard reminds me of windows 2003 I got it working fine and it was the case I was after even used some old ram I had its got 3GB now! The GPU is 64mb AGP, but regardless its a sexy case for chopping up to fit my new intel system.
I struggled just to change the mouse track speed had to type mouse in the help box then realised its in preferences. In all my years I've never had a go with Apple products and Maybe the new os systems are better, but like you said 11 year old Mac still looks good considering the quads still use the same G5 chassis! The reason why I wanted the 2003 model was the front power panel still uses a 8 pin cable splitter so I can splice up to normal ATX plugs. Anything post 2004 had a soldiered power usb board to the Mobo which is harder to mod!
I'll start my PC project soon.
Not sure if any of the guts are worth anything, will be keeping the stock fans as they look good with the feel of the MAC itself.

Rip out the Apple hardware, whack a decently new motherboard/cpu in there and run Hackintosh to keep her in doors happy.

Or do that and run it dual boot. MacOS for her and Windows for yourself.

I found I just don't get on with MacOS myself. Don't like the way it organises itself.

Are you going to spray over the Apple logo on the case?

Nah just for fun wanted to build an ATX G5 love the case spent hardly anything on it just recycling old parts and some new ones!
Spent most of the time slicing up appley cables just to mate it with ATX and some of it was painful with about 50 odd pins to work out and solider onto ATX iso parts!
Everything works waiting for some parts and I'm done TBF.
Wanted to keep the Appley feel to the case so did my best to not actually change anything external!
Time so far about one month on and off :lipsrsealed: as parts come in. Could have bought the G5 kits but it would have cost me about £200 so wanted to do it myself as its something to do before I die LOL!
