Hi All.
Quick question... I hope.
I have a 1988 1.8 GTI 8v digifant
Just fitted a second hand head unit and had some work done to the engine.
Since getting it back on the road the oil pressure light and buzzer comes on when I have driven approx half a mile down the road. The mechanic has checked the connections to sensors and all appears well. It has enough oil in it sounds first class. He is not concernd that it is lack of pressure. He thinks it is either faulty sensor or the head unit i fitted.
Anyhow I have taken it away and it has coverd about 100 miles with no problems.
Just the annoying buzzer and light within 1/2 mile ever time i start and drive it.
is there an easy way to check sensor, or is it a case of replacing and how much are they roughly. Dont want to replace them if it is head/speedo unit. Is it likely to be this unit? The chap i got it from online reckons it was working.... but cant trust anyone these days. If it was the head unit why would it start 1/2 mile down the road and not straight away?
Any thoughts gratefully recieved
Cheers
Scott

Sound like the sensor is done.
But dont ask me about testing it!

my first question would be what was done to the engine? and also what do you mean head unit? dash clocks?

Is the oil pump pick up clean and not blocked.

Visual inspection would be a good start. It's the white-bodied 1.8 bar one on top of the oil filter/cooler housing which works the light/buzzer combo. Slide the rubber boot back up the yellow wire, noting any damage to the cable and the tightness or looseness of the loom connector onto the pressure switch spade. Is there any oil coming out of the pressure switch? Is the spade terminal of the switch wobbly?
If the cable is bust, mend it. If the connection is loose or corroded, improve it. If the switch is leaking oil, or has a wobbly spade terminal, replace it. Genuine recommended.
New 1.8 bar switch from VW is around £15 inc., part number 056 919 081
