Title: Weird mpg readings on the trip computer.
Post by: MoMartin on 04 August 2014, 15:18
Does anyone know why my trip computer will essentially reset the mpg after about 15 seconds of driving? it happens as soon as i set off, and no more, but what it does is reset or drop the mpg readings after the first 15 seconds of driving, it normally drops from about 15-23mpg down to about 6mpg when there has been no actual change in the driving style.

also it seems that accelerating slowely up to a certain speed rather than planting the foot to the floor up to the same certain speed seems to use more mpg, is this correct? because ive always been taught that driving slowly will help maintain fuel...

Cheers, Mo

Sounds to me that you have "live" reading mpg on rather than journey mpg. On your display does it have a little number 1 in the top right corner? If it doesn't then you have it on live reading. On the right hand stalk there should be a button. Press it up and down to cycle though the different options until you find the one with a little one in the top right corner. If you can only find one with a little 2 in the corner that is your av mpg for the tank. To set it to journey there will be a button marked "reset" underneath on the right hand stalk. Press it once and it will change to "1"

Hope this helps :)

haha, i didn't make that mistake, there is a live mpg reading then an average trip reading, on the 1st tab right? well on the average mpg reading i can just be driving along, with it saying 23mpg, then all of a sudden it will drop to like 6mpg or something stupid, even when i haven't actually moved my foot on the throttle.

strange one that!!! not to hijack but mine plays up sometimes, if I press the button it wont change from 1-2 or reset, then it might reset shortly later, its like the button is broken!!! but the next trip it will be fine  :undecided:

Thats what gets me, everything works perfectly (though i do sometimes believe that is shows less mpg than i am actually getting)

cant help with the trip etc.

but with regards to driving style, low revs is not always the most economical, if you go too low then there is too much strain on the engine with it wanting to stall so it will put more fuel in etc.

its like Jogging up a very steep hill compared to sprinting on flat ground. jogging takes up less energy but because your on a hill its harder because theres more pressure.

the best way iv found to get good mpg is not going under 1700ish rpm, and not going over 3000ish rpm, using that i usually get the best part of 40mpg (with a few boots up to the red line in there), and if i really try and get economical i can see over 40mpg  (well i can see it if i havent got bored and fallen asleep :D )

40mpg?! i get between 33 and 36 mpg on the motorway and about 20 to 25 mpg around countryside areas/ town areas

In that Case Change your coolent tempature sensor :)

It will all depend on what the car has had done to it, engine condition, mileage and driving style all contribute to good / bad MPG

In that Case Change your coolent tempature sensor :)

how would that make a difference to mpg

and that mpg is between 70 and 80, i do get 40+ mpg if im driving at 60

A Faulty Coolent temp sensor can throw all kinds of MPG readings and cause bad MPG

so these cars are definitely meant to get 40+ then? because i mean 36mpg has always been my best really when doing a motorway run

the engine condition is good and the car isn't throwing any fault codes, but then again i have no idea if coolant temperature sensor would throw up any codes anyway.

edit - also wheres a decent place to buy a new sensor? as on ebay they are a few quid, but on gsf and ecp they are a tenner or more.

When I had my 1.8t on a 10+ mile run on a motorway, staying between 50-60 my car would easyly hit 42-46mpg bare in mind, every boost hose was replaced for silicone, I had the forge 007p, Ramair induction, Ko3s turbo, I serviced it ever 6k along with cleaning the thottle body and it had a new temp sensor, thermo, new coolent, and all the gaskets, injector seals, where replaced.

With where to buy one, there is only one place. VW it will set you back around £38 now but if you buy any other brand it WILL fail, you have been warned.

all my boost hoses are replaced with silicone hoses, and i have a pipercross panel filter, forge 007p, still have the k03 turbo  and also the throttle body has recently been cleaned /it was serviced around 4k miles ago, no idea when it was last serviced before that because i only bought the car 5k miles ago

also been remapped by r-tech if that does make a difference to fuel economy

and is oem quality temperature sensor a definite no go then? because i mean a jump from a few quid up to £38 quid is huge for a tiny sensor.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

I have to agree on this, the temp sensor needs to be genuine IMHO

ah okay then, does anyone know the part number for it?

nevermind i think i found it - 059919501

Changed the coolant temperature sensor today , and found that the old one i had in it was a cheap knock-off version, so that is almost certainly the problem, i will take it on a motorway run tomorrow to see if my overall mpg goes up though.

Always go genuine on this sensor, let us know how you get on

yeah, thats what i did, the person who had my car before me just seemed to work on the look of the car, and not the actual engine haha.

also i took it out on a motorway run today, i averaged 57 mph overall, (going up to 75 whenever i can) over 55 miles of motorway , and i got a max of 37.7mpg which is an improvement, but its still not quite what i should be getting.

the strange thing is that on the live mpg feed, when i was doing 75 i would actually average 42 or so mpg, but it just seemed to drop hugely (to about 25mpg) with the slightest adjustment of the pedal.

Yeah they do that, mine tends to do best between 60 and 70 mph

I'll try and take my car out tomorrow when theres less traffic, i think that all the slowing down and speeding up may have been what did it.

update - did a motorway run when it was semi busy, and averaged 39 mpg at an average of 66mph / going up to 78ish mph when possible.

Definitely improved my mpg, I have some coolant kicking around aswell, which i may aswell use up, so i'll change the coolant this weekend hopefully, which should again increase it a little bit, as the old stuff looks pretty knackered.

Ah okay then, i'll see what coolant i have at the moment, i'm sure it was the proper stuff Audi / Vw use, but not 100% certain.

I checked which coolant I have today and found that it was g48 coolant. Does anyone know the actual differences? Cheers
