This may not be the best place to put this but here goes...
Just spoke to a friend who is selling his MK4 R32.
He's had it 10 years, 2nd owner, 85k on the clock, pretty much all original except for a stainless steel exhaust. Deep pearl blue and half leather seats. He's got stacks of spares with it (even an original R jacket)
He's wanting £6k max for it.
I currently have a MK4 PD150 as a daily and the R32 would be my weekend toy.
Would I be better off saving for something like an edition 30 and map it etc?
Opinions?
Cheers.

try get it for 5k
-
Do you want note or power? That's the simple question
-
Edition 30 all day long
-
That exhaust is note is just so sweet!
My round trip to work is 40 miles, 5 days a week, so I would have to keep the oil burner if I got the R32.
The edition 30 may be a good alternative as I could afford to run that as a daily! And like you say has a better scope for power gains.
1st world problems!!!

personally id pick the r32. just becuse of the fact that it doesent need modifying.
the ed you could argue doesent need modifying, but you probly will get a map or something and thats where it all starts.
the r32 will also handle better. and cause your not using it as a daily you wownt be racking up the miles so you can buy a sh!tter for the daily to rack up the miles....
-
Edition 30 with a remap with knock spots off the R and its better engineering.
Faster, Better chassis, Cheaper to run, VERY tunable (IIRC circa £1000 will give you 340bhp), Newer, Will hold value better? and dare I say it...better looking (the MK4 although a classic shape, is starting to look a bit dated).

Are you being serious?? A standard r32 is pretty crap other than note mate spend a wee but in her and they are epic!! And an edition 30 will handle a lot better spend 400 and it will be 275bhp!!! I don't know anyone who has not had to spend a bit of money on an r32 to make it interesting!!
-
or just buy my 1.8t and add a bigger turbo
-
Or that haha but for an r32 for me you need these to start with
1. Blue Haldex
2. Light weight wheels
3. Kw coilovers
4. Milltek
5. Poly dog bone bush
6. short shifter
7. ARB's
8. Filter/CAI

I already have a PD150 oil burner, which is sort of mid build atm so wouldn't want it to waste away!
I hate choices!!

Flip a coin

Only buy a r32 for the sound. The have the worst 4wd system ever made and heavy. A 1.8t with a few mods will be faster.
If you're thinking about a ed30 and you buy a r32, you will always want a ed30.
If you get a ed30, you will know you made the right decision and wont look back at the r32.

For V6 experience I would buy something with a proper V6 to at least get the full on rush to fuel bill ration right
Nothing worse than a Mk4 1.8t with cheap map and Babyliss turbo pissing past you, the exhaust note of your V6 drowned out by his chavy laugh and the sight of his back turned cap the last thing you see

Nailed it!
Looks like I'm saving my pennies for an ED30. Cheers all!

Ed30 would be my choice.

its all down to personal choice, yes the R isnt the fastest car or the most amazing handling, however, i could happily live with a standard one.
the mk5 i couldnt live with, i dont think they look nice full stop. and i doubt i would ever own a mk5 unless someone said to me tomorow they have a mint mk5 thats low milage and they only wanted something stupid like sub 2k for it...
personal preference mate.

Hell of a lot better looking then a Mk4 lol Agree it is down to personal choice but fact the edition 30 is the better car.
-
It is all down to choice/taste at the end of the day, if its a good car and a bargain then get it out of your system.
Nowt wrong with an R32 really...
The 3.2 Alfa GTV has the most epic note and is an awesome drive, if the body and electrics did not fall apart at will and you could get more than 20mpg I would have one
Would still be bothered by the odd 1.8t thoguh
My brother has a Merc 3.5 V6 at just under 300bhp, this is an awesome car and leaves most for dust even with a slush box.
In both of the above you dont look like a chav/patron of Maccy D's
