Tappetts a little noisey on start up, changed the oil which helped, are replacement tappetts easy to source? Seen them on Fleabay but wondering around quality?
-
got some for mine from GSF , had the same problem & it cured it

drain 1 litre of oil out of your engine and replace with a litre of atf. run car around gently for 3/4 hundred miles and then change oil and filter. the atf is like a detergent which cleans the muck out off the tappets.
-
I would also consider dropping your sump and making sure the oil pump pick up is clean.

Thanks for the info will certainly look into some of the ideas.

recently stripped down my tappets to there smallest components and cleaned them out with diesel and a scotchbrite and air line. absolutely delighted with the result  no ticking noises whatsoever now when its cold or hot.

Had the same problem myself; bought a set at reasonable price from ECP and problem solved. A few miles later as bad as before; I think that is just the way they are?
I take it easy until the engine warms up and then...

How much were they?

How much were they?
I can't remember, I bought one from VW at a silly price then discovered the exact same item at ECP for much less and so bought another seven.
ECP currently lists:
Aftermarket tappet 311440021 £5.41
Ina tappet 313440020 £16.25
