Title: MK3 GTI 3 Cylinder issue
Post by: gtihammy on 28 July 2014, 18:07
So typically living in Scotland we get more rain than anything else, So after about 24 hours of rain I went to start the golf turned over no joy. After leaving her for a day thinking it would get warmer I tried again started first time but running on 3 cylinders (Cylinder 1 next to airbox not firing), so I began exploring my options as to what it could be, so far ive replaced

-Rotor Arm
-Dizzy Cap
-HT Leads
-Spark Plugs
- Ran a compression test (All Normal)

We also checked to see if cylinder 1 was sparking at the plug it is. So ive went as far as i can think unless its an injector, but my mechanic friend had a look and said the piston looks quite wet, can anybody help?

So you have spark fuel and compression and its not firing?

You sure it not running on 2 and you got two leads on the wrong cylinders? Because it should be running.

check leads are going to the correct place.

check dizzy pins are clean (use tipex to put it back in the right place)

you havent twisted dizzy? alters ignition timing if you have, can cause misfiring obviously.

but yeah sounds like theres no reason for one cylinder to misfire otherwise.

You will also get safe limiter if ignition timing is out.

check the coil - relatively cheap and known to go wrong on mk3
