Title: Air con kaput
Post by: GAL-GTD on 25 July 2014, 09:13
My air con was blowing out hot air. Had it re-gassed,no leaks etc. my mechanic reckons it's my air con pump/compressor as the bolt on the pulley is working itself loose. Anyone had similar problems and give some advice? 60 plate gtd (2011) 30k miles. Thanks in advance.

Hey man mine was identical. It is also a 60 plate 2011 GTD. Took it to VW and they replaced the compressor for me for free out of extended warrenty, otherwise it wouldve costed me £500 out me pocket

Is it a "known" problem do you know? Don't have a warranty so looks like I'm hammering the overtime to try pay for it to be replaced lol.

Also had mine done earlier this year. I was out of warranty (59 plate GTD), but VW picked up the cost of the compressor (£500+) and I paid £200 for the labour/diagnostic.
Yes it's a known problem, within 1hr of me leaving the car with them, I got a phone call saying it would be goodwill for the part.

That's good to know RobS23GTI thanks. I've just booked it in to get the diagnostic and get the ball rolling with some goodwill. Fingers crossed.

Quick update. Vw are offering good will. 100% part. 100% labour. Only have to pay for the diagnostic. £75. Happy days.

Good result.  Given our current weather, the sooner it's sorted, the better.

After reading about the air con on this thread i hope mine packs in soon, i couldn't see Western VW replacing a compressor as a goodwill gesture when the car is out of warranty!

I'm guessing you were still under warrenty?

Yeh, i'm still under warranty. I just leave the air con on all the time. What's best how to run air con? When it goes in for it's 30k service they're going to top the gas up and she did mention that the brake fluid is going to get changed. I don't know how much that'll add to the bill!

Brake fluid change at VW is only £40

That's good value and at least it's peace of mind that it's been done.

Are they doing a full air con service?  If so, interested to know how much they charge you.

As far as i know its just a gas top up. I'll ask though. Kwik fit does a gas top up for £49.99. A mate did his gas top up with gas and the regulator from Halfords , can't remember how much though.

I'd avoid the diy approach on aircon personally loads of specialists about, i was told the air con needs a service every 2 years this should help to avoid compressor failure

Yeh, i'm quite happy for them to do it. Waiting on a relay for a friends 58 plate Honda civic to see if that cures their intermittent blowing hot cold air sometimes.Works for ten minutes or so then spits the dummy out. Then it works again, been topped up twice. I wasn't there to see what pressure it was filled to the the first instance. The second time he drained and completely filled it again. It was 2 days between the rill refill. I suppose we could have seen from the numbers that there could be a leak, if we knew them.
With the known problem on the air compressor unit i'm more than happy to keep the warranty intact.

Just had mine serviced due to a really bad smell on the first 2 minutes, and only when outside really warm! Problem is that even though it's been done, smell seems to have come back within weeks. Back to the dealer for another go.

Bad smell usually blamed on the pollen filter, think done every other service. Culprit is the filter contaminated with mould and bacteria.

My aircon is currently not working & showing the same signs as what's described in this thread, VW want £70 for diagnostics but as the car is under warranty I shouldn't have to pay anything IF they find a problem, if they don't I will have to pay the £70.

I'm wondering whether or not I should book it in for an aircon service which is £50 but claims to check the Compressor & Condenser are working correctly, seems like the better option.

Well if the air con isn't working and it's under warranty VW shouldn't charge anything. Take me i'm due a service shortly and i've a problem with my heated rear screen not working. It IS WHEN the car is running it shows on the Radio it comes on and goes off again. I've checked the fuse is ok and in the CECM all is well. I'll tell them no fix under warranty it wont go into them for a service.

I have tried that stance, but they want to charge me £50 for an air con service as the dealership that I bought the car from (Alan Day) didn't do an Air Con service when the car was with them.

Going to ring customer services once I'm home as I shouldn't be punished for a dealerships error. Not happy!

I'll see what happens when i go in. The last time they tried to diagnose something it was a bit like "Little Britain, the computer says no!" They were going to have to go the old route of using the human computer " the brain" i left feeling reassured that they wouldn't cope and it would have cost me thousands of pounds!
