So just had my last free service and boy am I glad I don't have to frequent the stealers anymore! Looks like I'm gonna need a full set of discs and pads in the next few months. Does anyone know how much these might cost? The stealer quoted me £630!
-
I did my own front pads for £40. Discs would have cost me another £50. So call it £100 front and rear (to do on your own) So I would say at least half what you have been quoted at an independent.

£300 odd sounds a bit more like it!

For non-service items mate either go to Sterling Garage who are VW approved or get the price from the and Ridgeway will match it

£630 !!!!! are they gold plated? If they are the standard 312mm ones, they should be about £120, plus 1-2 hours labour.
Maybe a good time to upgrade to R32/S3 set up or the NQSBBK

What tools needed for the disc and pad change? Piston wind back tool? and some sort of special allen key?
Checked out discs on carparts4less, bit confusing as to the size! suppose it's just off with the wheel and measure the diameter?

If it's front brakes you don't need wind back tool just squeeze piston back using old pads and a screwdriver before stripping, think you also need a 7mm Allen key and a torx bit to remove the disc but I can't remember the size couple of scanners to I think 13 + 15mm. Bit of copper grease for the new pads and a good wire brush set to clean everything up.

Cheers thats great. I was quoted £350.

How many miles have you covered, I am on 72k in the GTD and still on the original discs and pads? No mention from the stealers yet.

Yup, no mention in April from the stealers at the MOT point so they must be ok. Service in a couple of thousand so will be interested to see what they say. I have to admit I tend to roll up to junctions rather than brake up to junctions. (more economical).

When I did my R32 I got Pagid discs from eurocarparts for around £140 for fronts, after around 2 months they were warped. Ended up replacing with genuine VW and they were a lot better. If I'm changing brakes would stick with VW unless upgrading to something performance if u buy cheap u get cheap.

Never had any problems with eurocarparts Eicher discs, there pads can squeal though. I must have done over a dozen cars with them this year so far without any issues and many in previous years. Including this year my own Leon (Front & rear), a family members Ibiza and a friends Mk4 golf (F & R).
Just a general note: Discs and pads are the biggest con a main dealership will use during a service to try to make the dealership more money. So be careful and don't take what a main dealer says about brake condition as gosbal. They get paid to upsell thats why many of them do that 'health check' sheet...

I'm only on 24k. They aren't too bad slight ridge at the extreme edge of the disc. Think the ones depending on the size are Bosch discs. Carparts4less i think are part of eurocarparts cheaper on some items.

Agree I never go with what VW say as there just trying to up sell all the time due to the fixed price servicing schedule. I think the discs were just not able to cope with my hard braking if I didn't drive it like I stole it every day they would be fine. I also just think that brakes are important so if I can get good quality parts over a cheaper brand I will go from them just for piece of mind too.
