Hi
new to the vw golf seen, had alot of experience with older British cars from 60s and 70s and also im a painter in motor trade
possible interested in a 86 mk2 golf gti 8v, taxed and motd but done 206000 miles, is this high or miles to be unsure of?
Also the guy mentioned something about a 2 litre bottom end has been fitted, is this a good or bad thing?
Other than that the car is standard I believe, not seen it as yet but hopefully try this week
anything else to be weary of?

Buy on body condition alone. Engines are relatively cheap but major rust work isn't. Check for rust under arches, pillars, in the filler cap, window sill.

Went to see car and its really quite solid, no real rust around filler cap or even on arches and sills, wings have some around bottoms where it connects to valance but getting replacements with it, looks like its never had any welding at all, had engine rebuilt and all sounds fine,
interior seems all good too
He wants £650 is that a fair price?

Sounds ok to me buddy

Check out the Buying Guide thread above.
But as said, buy on bodywork. Everything else is easily replaced. Any pics?

Bbs rz wheels
looks in good shape for an early car. Missing centre caps.
check under the doors for rot. I would snap that up of its not rusty.
They do say buy on body but when I sell a mk2 its tough explaining that to people who think history is more important.
The 2.0 bottom end is probably a good thing but post a pic of the engine as some of us can spot it right away.

Yeah defo need centre caps
Drivers door knackered on bottom with rust need second hand one
underneath has not been welded and still looks solid,
Bottom end is 2 litre had it checked yesterday
I am surprised how well the car drives its great, solid no knocks and engine pulls really well and is really quick, this is the first golf ive ever had but driven newer mk5, 6 and newest ones, but its a really great car
